Heavenly Father,
In the quietness of this moment, I come before You with a heart full of contrition and yearning. I reflect upon the words of Luke 15:18-24, where the wayward son declared, "I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee." Lord, I resonate with this declaration of humility. I acknowledge the mistakes I have made, the paths I have wandered away from Your presence, and the burdens I have carried due to my disobedience.
You, Almighty God, are a Father of compassion and mercy. I seek to arise from my own despair, to turn my heart back to You. As I kneel in the quiet spaces of my soul, I recall the promise of Your loving embrace waiting to receive me. I lament my choices which have distanced me from Your love and guidance. I have fallen short of Your glory and neglected the blessings that come from living in alignment with Your will. In my heart, I cry out, "Father, I have sinned!"
Lord, I recognize my unworthiness — just as the son felt, I too often believe I am not worthy to bear the name of Your child. I see the struggles around me, the cries of people hungry for restoration, and I think of myself. I do not deserve Your grace, but it is precisely that grace that I seek. Teach me, O Lord, to approach Your throne without hesitation, to lay my burdens at Your feet, and to trust in Your unending love. Let my heart remember that Your mercies are new every morning. Remind me that even in my darkest moments, Your light is a beacon guiding me home.
And as I imagine the son’s return to his father, I am filled with emotions as I picture the father who "saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him." What a beautiful image of unconditional love! As I turn back to You, Lord, I long to feel that compassion wrap around me. Run to me, O God, and embrace me with Your love. Let me know in every fiber of my being that no matter how far I stray, Your arms are always open wide to receive me.
I ask for the strength to arise from my past mistakes, to embrace the hope of a new beginning, just as the son did. May I always remember that there is joy in repentance, and the sorrow of my sin pales in comparison to the joys of Your forgiveness. I plead that You would help me to speak boldly with sincerity in my prayer, saying, "Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight!" Show me the depth of my wrongdoing but also the heights of the love and freedom that come through Your forgiveness.
Lord, as the son was met with celebration, I desire to live out the fullness of life that comes from being restored in You. I pray to wear that 'best robe' of dignity and worth, to bear the 'ring' of belonging, and to walk in the 'shoes' of readiness to serve in Your kingdom. Inspire me to share this same embrace of grace with others who have strayed from their paths, that they too may find their way back to the heart of the Father.
Thank You, Lord, for never giving up on me, for always desiring my return, and for throwing a celebration in heaven for every sinner who turns back to You. May my life be a testament to the love You bestowed upon me, a reflection of Your grace toward those who need to know Your mercy.
In Jesus’ precious name I pray,
Amen.

"I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants." ' And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' And they began to be merry." - Luke 15:18-24
