A Prayer of Reflection on Betrayal and Forgiveness
"And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him. Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves? When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness." - Luke 22:47-53

O Heavenly Father,
As I sit in Your presence, humbled by the weight of Your words in Luke 22:47-53, I come before You, seeking understanding and clarity amidst the shadows of betrayal. In this moment, I reflect on the heart of Judas, one of the twelve, who chose to betray our Lord with a kiss—a gesture meant to convey affection turned into a tool of treachery. Lord, how sorrowful it is to think that such an intimate act could be laced with deceit and malice. I pray that You help me to recognize the moments in my life where I may have engaged in acts that betray my commitments and my love for others.
Father, please forgive me for the times I have been like Judas, when my words or actions have not aligned with the love I profess for You and for those around me. Help me to align my heart with Yours so that my kisses may always be true, reflecting genuine love and not hidden agendas. Just as Judas approached Jesus with disloyal intentions, help me to see clearly the moments I may approach others without sincerity.
As Jesus faced betrayal, He stood in grace, asking, "Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?" (Luke 22:48). In Your Kingdom, Father, we are called to a higher standard of love. Teach me the power of integrity in my relationships and to refrain from actions that would lead others into a space of distrust or disillusionment. Help me to cultivate a heart that seeks to promote truth and fosters unconditional love, even when faced with hardness of heart.
Moreover, I reflect on the tumult that ensued as those around You responded in haste, brandishing swords in defense. They sought to protect their Master, yet their approach was with violence instead of peace. "Lord, shall we smite with the sword?" (Luke 22:49). This question reveals the impulsive human heart, often quick to react in fear or anger before understanding the true nature of the battle.
Help me, Lord, to temper my reactions. Teach me to seek Your wisdom and understanding, especially during times of adversity. There are moments in my life when circumstances feel overwhelming, and I may be tempted to respond with anger or violence. But I desire to be like Jesus, who, instead of allowing chaos to reign, extended His healing hand to the very one who was sent to arrest Him. "And he touched his ear, and healed him" (Luke 22:51).
May my first response in conflict be one of healing—extending grace and compassion rather than furthering discord. Teach me the beauty of reconciliation, even with those who do wrong against me. In a world that often chooses division and strife, empower me to be an agent of Your peace, extending love where there could easily be hate.
Lastly, Lord, I am struck by Jesus’ declaration to the chief priests and those of power when He said, "Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?" (Luke 22:52). It showcases how unaware they were of the true nature of their actions. Open my eyes, dear Lord, to the darkness that can sometimes cloud judgment and lead me astray. Don't allow me to act under the influence of fear but rather to stand firm in Your light, recognizing that in moments of trials, You are ever-present and reign supreme.
May I carry this lesson with me always, understanding that every act of betrayal, every moment of conflict, is an invitation to love deeper and to heal wider. I thank You, Lord, for Your grace in my life, and I pray that it will overflow into the lives of those I encounter. In Your mercy, guide me toward everlasting paths of peace, love, and understanding.
In Jesus' name, I pray,
Amen.

Luke 22:47-53 - "While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was preceding them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But Jesus answered and said, “Stop! No more of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him. Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as you would against a robber? While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but this hour and the power of darkness are yours.”"
