Heavenly Father,

As we bow our heads and humble our hearts before You, we reflect deeply on the scripture from Luke 23:56, "And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment." Lord, let us first acknowledge Your holy name, an exalted name above all names. We approach Your throne of grace with gratitude for the gift of Your Word that enlightens our paths and guides our decisions.

In this verse, we see the disciples and the faithful women returning, filled with sorrow yet determined, to prepare the spices and ointments necessary for honoring the body of our Lord, Jesus Christ. They showed us the importance of preparation and the weight of grief- not one that leads to despair, but one that finds expression in acts of love and service. As we center our thoughts on this lesson, we ask You, dear Father, to help us prepare our hearts, our lives, and our actions to honor You in all that we do.

Lord, grant us a spirit of diligence that inspires us to prepare not just for the tangible, but also for the spiritual aspects of our lives. Teach us to lay the foundation of our faith with righteous acts, with prayer, and with service to others. Just as the women took the time to prepare spices for Christ’s body, may we take the time to prepare our spirits with godly intentions, honoring Your sacred plan for our lives. Let our preparations be focused on spreading Your love, sharing the Gospel, and extending grace to those around us.

Infuse us with purpose as we begin each day, knowing that every moment can be an act of worship when done in remembrance of You. Help us to live lives that reflect the preparatory heart of these faithful women, seeking ways to bless others and draw them closer to You, even amidst our sorrow. Let our hearts break for what breaks Yours and may that break lead us to action that prepares the way for Your glorious presence in the lives of those we encounter.

As the verse progresses, we see that after their preparation, they rested on the Sabbath, honoring Your commandment. Lord, we are reminded of the significance of rest. In our busy, often chaotic lives, we sometimes forget that You commanded us to rest. Help us understand that rest is not a sign of weakness but a divine invitation to rejuvenation. They chose to rest even while mourning, recognizing that there is a time for everything, that You have woven sacred rhythms throughout creation. They allowed themselves to grieve but also knew the importance of waiting upon You.

Teach us, O God, to embrace the beauty of rest, to step back in our lives to reconnect with You. May we find those moments of quiet reflection, where we can lay our burdens down and immerse ourselves in Your presence. Forgive us for our restlessness and our inclination to fill every moment with activity, neglecting the rejuvenation that comes from resting in You.

Help us become intentional about scheduling Sabbath moments in our lives, whether it be through prayer, meditation, or simply enjoying Your creation. Remind us that it is in our stillness that we often hear You most clearly.

As we prepare our hearts, our lives, and our spirits, we commit to resting in Your love and promises on our Sabbath days, honoring You as the Creator who knows the need for balance, for work and for rest. May our preparations and our rests point others to the truth of who You are and the peace that can only come through relationship with You.
