A Prayer of Honoring Our Heavenly Father
"A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the Lord of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name? Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The table of the Lord is contemptible. And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the Lord of hosts." - Malachi 1:6-8

O Lord of Hosts, we come before You today with hearts burdened and humbled, acknowledging the solemn truth of Your Word as spoken through the prophet Malachi. "A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear?" (Malachi 1:6 KJV). Lord, You have set forth a divine principle of honor and respect, and we confess that we have often faltered in our commitment to uphold it.
Father, we seek to recognize You as our Father in Heaven, the giver of every good gift and the author of our faith. We acknowledge that we are Your children, created in Your image and called to reflect Your glory. Yet we often neglect the reverence due to Your name. We ask for Your forgiveness for the times we have not honored You as our Father - for the moments we have treated You with indifference or disrespect, failing to see the sacredness of our relationship with You.
"O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name?" (Malachi 1:6 KJV). Lord, we pray for those among us who serve as leaders in Your house. May they constantly examine their hearts and actions, ensuring they are conduits of Your love and reverence rather than vessels of contempt. Help us, as a church and as individuals, to reflect Your holiness in all our dealings, both with You and with one another. We realize that our service to You must come from a heart that genuinely honors You. Anything less than our best sacrifices our witness to the world.
As we reflect upon how we have treated Your altar, we are reminded of Your words: "Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee?" (Malachi 1:7 KJV). We confess that we have often brought forth our leftovers, our indifference, and our complacent offerings. Father, we have been guilty of coming to You with the bare minimum – a half-hearted worship and a lukewarm love. We confess the times we have prioritized our own desires over our obligation to honor You with our best.
Lord, cultivate in us a genuine spirit of adoration and reverence. Teach us to offer You not just our time, our resources, or our gifts, but our entire lives as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable unto You (Romans 12:1). May we never view Your table as contemptible; rather, may we cherish it as an opportunity to partake in communion with You and to acknowledge the depth of Your grace and mercy in our lives.
"And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil?" (Malachi 1:8 KJV). Lord, we recognize that You desire our best and not our scraps. Help us to align our hearts with Yours so that our offerings reflect our gratitude and reverence. Forgive us for the times we have been careless, for offering You our time when it is convenient or our service when we feel obliged. We desire to submit our lives so that every part of our being is an offering unto You; let our praises and works not be perceived as contemptible.
When we consider the question, "Will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person?" (Malachi 1:8 KJV), we are reminded that You deserve our utmost dedication. Help us to live in such a way that not only our personal lives but our collective worship is pleasing in Your sight. May we give to You what we would gladly give to those we respect greatly – our best, most heartfelt offerings.
Father, as we close this prayer, may we be spurred on to honor You in every facet of our lives. May we live with an awareness of Your presence and an understanding of Your majesty, always seeking to glorify Your name through our conduct, our worship, and our relationships with one another.
In the name of Jesus, we lift these prayers to You, beseeching Your guidance to walk in reverence and honor towards You, our Heavenly Father. Amen.

Malachi 1:6-8 - "A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me? says the Lord Almighty. It is you priests who show contempt for my name. But you ask, 'How have we shown contempt for your name?' By offering defiled food on my altar. But you ask, 'How have we defiled you?' By saying that the Lord's table is contemptible. When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you? says the Lord Almighty."
