"A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the Lord of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And now, I pray you, beseech God that he will be gracious unto us: this hath been by your means: will he regard your persons? saith the Lord of hosts. Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for nought? neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith the Lord of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand. For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the Lord of hosts. But ye have profaned it, in that ye say, The table of the Lord is polluted; and the fruit thereof, even his meat, is contemptible. Ye said also, Behold, what a weariness is it! and ye have snuffed at it, saith the Lord of hosts; and ye brought that which was torn, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye brought an offering: should I accept this of your hand? saith the Lord. O Lord of Hosts, Creator of heaven and earth, we come before You in humility, seeking to honor Your holy name as You deserve. We acknowledge the plaintive cry in Your word from Malachi 1:6-14, where You question our reverence and our sacrifices. You, O God, who are our Father, have asked, “Where is mine honour?” and we stand here, saddened by the realization that we have sometimes taken Your grace for granted.

O Lord, we reflect on your lamentation through the prophet Malachi as You express displeasure with the offerings of Your people. We confess together that we have sometimes presented to You our best leftovers instead of our best offerings. We have offered up polluted bread, blind sacrifices, and those things that have been insufficient, and we inquire with the priests, “Wherein have we polluted thee?” Open our eyes, Lord, and reveal to us the ways we have deemed Your sacred things as contemptible. Help us to see that our carelessness in our worship reflects a deeper lack of honor toward Your holiness.
Lord, You have set a high standard for what it means to come before You, a great King. Would we bring before You a lamb without spot, a heart without blemish? Teach us, O God, that true sacrifice involves more than ritual—it involves a surrendered heart, a humble spirit, recognizing the weight of Your glory and sacrifice. In our prideful desires and comfort-seeking ways, we have brought to you the lame and sick, thinking that perhaps You would overlook our imperfections. Indeed, Lord, should we dare to offer to our governor what we do not wish to offer to You? Awaken us to the reality that our shallow actions will not please You, neither in our tithes nor in our service.
Gracious God, we beseech You to revive our hearts so that we may desire the pure incense of our offerings for Your name. May we be reminded of Your great name and the reverence it commands among the nations. From the rising of the sun to its setting, may we exalt Your name, not just with our lips but with our actions, our thoughts, and our very lives. Let us not be like the deceiver who vowed to give good yet sacrificed the corrupt. For You have stated that Your name is dreadful among the heathen, filled with awe and greatness. Let it be revered in our communities that they might be drawn to You, O Lord.
We praise You, Lord, for revealing to us the depth of our shortcomings. Let us be purposeful in our worship, genuine in our offerings, and ever mindful of Your desire for purity in our hearts. Teach us to approach Your altar with earnestness and sacred joy, knowing that our sacrifices reflect our love toward You. Lead us back to the heart of true worship, Lord, where nothing less than our best is laid on Your altar.
In all things, may we bring honor to Your name, proclaim the good news of Your greatness, and encourage one another to lay down our lives like living sacrifices, holy and acceptable unto You.
