A Prayer for True Riches in Christ: Reflecting on Mark 10:17-23
"And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!" - Mark 10:17-23

Gracious and Loving God,
With humbled hearts, we enter Your presence today, reflecting upon the profound teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ as recorded in the Gospel of Mark 10:17-23. We come before You, like the young ruler who ran to Jesus with great urgency, kneeling in supplication, desperately seeking the keys to eternal life. O Lord, as we kneel before You, may our own hearts mirror that young man's desire for righteousness and salvation.
Good Master, we echo his question, ‘What shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?’ Help us discern our own paths, our own struggles, and the treasures we hold dear that may keep us from fully surrendering ourselves to You.
As Jesus pointed out the commandments, let us remember that Your commandments are not merely rules, but pathways to a life that reflects Your holiness and righteousness. 'Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.' We pray for the strength to uphold these commandments in a world that often disregards them.
Father, we confess our shortcomings. We have often fallen short of Your glory, and like the rich young ruler, we may boast of our adherence to the law while neglecting the deeper transformation You call us to. Help us, Lord, to honestly assess our lives and recognize the one thing we may lack. Just as Jesus looked at the young man in love and revealed his true need, may we, too, reflect on what holds us back from complete devotion to You.
Lord, in a society that equates success with material wealth, we acknowledge the powerful grip that possessions can have on our hearts. When Jesus instructed the young man to sell all he had and to give to the poor, He was not merely presenting a challenge; He was inviting him into a life of true richness found in surrender and service. Give us the courage, dear Lord, to let go of our earthly attachments. Teach us that our treasures, when not rooted in You, can ultimately lead to sadness and grief as they weigh on our souls, as they did with the young ruler.
Today, strengthen our resolve to take up our crosses and follow You, whatever the cost may be. Help us to boldly proclaim that true riches lie not in material wealth, but in the immeasurable grace found in a life committed to You. May we joyfully invest our time, talents, and resources into the kingdom work, reaching out to the poor, the marginalized, and the suffering.
As we remember Jesus’ sobering words, 'How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God,' we take these words to heart. They serve as a clarion call to examine our motivations and our reliance on worldly security. Let us be reminded that riches can easily mask our dependence on You. We ask, Lord, for You to open our eyes to how we can align our desires with Your heart. Let our lives testify that we place our trust in You alone, the true Source of hope and salvation.
As we continue on our journey of faith, let us do so with the knowledge that true eternal life is not merely a reward at the end but a vibrant relationship with You, experienced each day as we follow the way of Christ. May we shine brightly in a world besieged by darkness, showcasing the radical love and generosity that comes from hearts fully surrendered to You.
In the name of Jesus, our Good Master, we pray,
Amen.

Mark 10:17-23 - "As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. "Good teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" "Why do you call me good?" You know the commandments: 'You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.'"
