Garments and Branches Before the King

"And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way." - Mark 11:8

"And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way." - Mark 11:{verse.verse_number}

Lord Jesus Christ,

We come before Thee with reverence and holy awe, remembering the Scripture written in the Gospel according to Mark, and we receive it as truth and as light for our hearts. Thy Word saith, “And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way.” We pause and behold that scene, and we confess that Thou art worthy of every honor. Thou art the King, and yet Thou camest in meekness. Thou art glorious, and yet Thou didst draw near to the lowly. And as the people made a way before Thee with garments and branches, we ask that Thou wouldst make a way within us—clearing what is crooked, humbling what is proud, and preparing what is barren, until our hearts become a road made ready for Thy presence.

Lord, teach us what it means to “spread their garments in the way.” We acknowledge that a garment often represents what we possess, what we rely upon, what we use to cover ourselves. Today we lay before Thee the garments of our self-sufficiency, our reputation, our plans, and our comforts. We lay down every covering that is not Thee. We confess that we have often wanted Thee to walk with us without requiring our surrender. Forgive us for praising Thee with our lips while holding tightly to our rights and preferences. Give us grace to lay our lives down in the way, that Thy will might pass through unhindered, and that our obedience would be an offering made in love.

And Lord, Thy Word also saith, “and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way.” We consider those branches as a sign of honor, a visible testimony that Thou art welcomed and received. Yet branches must be cut down; something living must be yielded. Grant us hearts willing to part with what we cling to, even good things, if they keep us from wholehearted devotion. If there are habits, attachments, entertainments, resentments, or secret sins that we have refused to cut down, give us the courage to bring them to Thee. Help us not merely to admire Thee from a distance, but to prepare a path of holiness and integrity where Thou art truly honored.

Make us a people who do not offer Thee what costs us nothing. Let our worship be more than words—let it be surrender, generosity, repentance, and faith. Where we have made our lives centered upon ourselves, turn us again, that Thou mightest be central. Where our hearts have been crowded with fear, cleanse them with Thy peace. Where we have been scattered and double-minded, gather us into a single devotion, that we might honor Thee with simplicity and truth.

Lord Jesus, walk into the streets of our thoughts and affections. Walk into our homes, and sanctify our relationships. Walk into our work, and make us faithful stewards. Walk into our churches, and purify our motives, that we would not seek applause from men, but approval from God. Teach us to make room for Thee in the ordinary pathways of daily life, so that every step becomes an act of reverence.

We pray for the grace to welcome Thee even when Thy coming challenges us. Keep us from celebrating Thee only when Thou seemest to fit our expectations. Give us the humility to follow Thee when the road leads to sacrifice, when obedience is costly, and when faith requires patience. Thou art worthy not only of branches and garments, but of the throne of our hearts.

And as we remember, “And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way,” let this Scripture be fulfilled in us spiritually. Let our lives become a prepared way. Let our pride be laid down like garments. Let our compromises be cut down like branches. Let our praise be sincere, our repentance be deep, and our love be steadfast.

We honor Thee, Lord Jesus. Reign in us. Lead us in Thy truth. Make us faithful to Thee in public and in private. And let our whole life proclaim that Thou art welcome here.

In the name of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
