A Prayer for Spiritual Fruitfulness
"And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet." - Mark 11:13

O Heavenly Father, Creator of all that is good and beautiful, I humbly come before You today, reflecting on the profound message contained in the words of Mark 11:13. You taught us through the example of the fig tree, that appearances alone can be deceiving, and that true fruitfulness is measured not by mere foliage but by the substance and quality of our spiritual lives. Lord, as we gather in Your presence, guide our hearts and minds to seek a deeper understanding of what it means to bear fruit in Your kingdom.
Lord, I thank You for the gift of Your Word, which reveals Your nature and Your desires for us. Just as Your Son Jesus approached the fig tree from afar, may we also have the discernment to seek the truth hidden within ourselves. Help us Lord, to examine our own lives—are we mere leaves without fruit? Are we displaying outward expressions of faith without the inner transformation? Forgive us for the times we have shrouded ourselves in the illusion of spirituality while neglecting the vital necessity of bearing the fruit of the Spirit.
As we ponder Mark 11:13, we recognize the deep significance of the fig tree—often a symbol of prosperity and abundance in the Scripture. Father, we desire to be like that fig tree not just in appearance, but in substance and essence. Help us to grow roots deep in Your love and to flourish in the grace that You have bestowed upon us. In our busy lives, let us not be distracted by busyness and outward displays of activity, but instead guide us back to the essence of our calling—to love, serve, and bear fruit that glorifies Your name.
Jesus, You approached that tree, looking for fruit. How often, God, do You seek the fruits of kindness, patience, and gentleness in us? May we be reminded that our life’s purpose is not to merely exist, but to produce an abundance of fruit that blesses others and honors You. Help us to cultivate inside us the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. Let these fruits be evident in our interactions, our decisions, and in every facet of our lives.
Father, I pray for those moments in which we feel barren, as some seasons may bring a sense of dryness and unfruitfulness. Like the fig tree, may we also remember that there are seasons—times designated for growth, blooming, and ultimately, harvesting. Teach us patience, Lord, when we feel like we are in our desert seasons, and help us to trust that You are right there with us, guiding us toward potential fruitfulness in Your perfect timing.
Help us to resist the temptation of comparing ourselves with others, as we each have our own unique calling and potential to bear fruit in different ways. Let us celebrate the diversity of gifts within Your body—the Church—and to recognize that we are all integral parts of the Kingdom’s work. May we uplift one another in our journeys, spurring our brothers and sisters on toward love and good deeds.
Lord, I ask for a fresh outpouring of Your Spirit upon our lives, igniting a passion within us to be fruitful stewards of the life You have given. May we not become complacent in our faith, but rather awaken each day with a renewed desire to fulfill our purpose, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in knowledge of You.
As we conclude this prayer, I ask You to come into our hearts and awaken us to Your presence. May we truly seek to bear fruit for Your glory, shining brightly in this world as lights reflecting Your love. I pray this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
