A Prayer for Discernment and Genuine Giving
"Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it." - Mark 12:15

O Gracious and Eternal God, our Creator and Sustainer,
We humbly bow our hearts before You today, coming before Your throne of grace with voices that echo with both reverence and gratitude. We seek to draw near to You, acknowledging the sacredness of this moment as we meditate upon Your Word, particularly the profound truth spoken by our Lord recorded in the book of Mark, chapter 12, verse 15: "Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it."
Father, in Your infinite wisdom, You discern the motives of our hearts. You know every intention, every desire, and every secret thought. As we reflect on this verse, we are reminded of the danger of hypocrisy, the masks we wear in our interactions with others and even within our own hearts. Lord, we pray that You would illuminate our minds and hearts, helping us to recognize any false pretense within ourselves. Let the light of Christ shine into our innermost being, revealing to us where we have not been genuine in our giving, whether it be our time, our resources, or our love.
Teach us, Almighty God, the meaning of true generosity. As You have freely given us mercy, grace, and blessings that overflow our cup, help us to offer our lives as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to You. May our giving stem from a heart that reflects Your love, not from obligation or the desire for praise. Forgive us, Lord, where we have been self-serving; forgive us for the times we have counted the cost, hesitating to share our blessings with others because of fear, pride, or disbelief.
Help us to remember that giving is a privilege, not a burden. Just as Jesus asked to see the penny, may we also recognize the value of every small act of kindness and generosity that we can offer. Let no gift be too small in Your sight, and let our willingness to share what we have serve as a testimony of our faith. Lord, instill in us a spirit of joy in giving, a spirit that echoes the words of Paul in 2 Corinthians 9:7, where he reminds us that You love a cheerful giver.
Moreover, may we too avoid the trap of temptation that leads us to question the righteous call to give. Let us not be like those who approached Jesus with insincerity, seeking only to entangle Him in words, but let us come before You with a pure heart, desiring to honor You in all we do. Encourage us to seek wisdom in our decisions, particularly when it comes to sharing our blessings. May we discern wisely between genuine needs and mere wants, and may we be sensitive to the leading of Your Spirit in every moment of giving.
Lord, we also pray for our leaders and those placed in positions of influence. May they, too, be guided by Your wisdom and grace in their dealings, ensuring that they lead with integrity and transparency. May their actions reflect Your love and compassion towards those whom they serve. We ask that you strike down deceit and hypocrisy in every corner of our society, replacing it with truth, justice, and a heart that seeks to uplift the weak and the marginalized.
In times of uncertainty, remind us, dear Father, that our ultimate giving should be our devotion to You. As we strive to reflect Christ's love, may we always return to the fundamental truth that You have given us everything we need in Christ. As we pour ourselves out for others, may we remember that every act of love draws us closer to You.
May our lives reflect a testimony of what it means to be transformed by Your grace. We ask this in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who taught us the true meaning of giving and lives within us as the ultimate example of love and generosity.
Amen.
