A Prayer for Rest in the Midst of the Storms of Life
"And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat." - Mark 6:31

Dear Heavenly Father,
As we come before You today, we lift our hearts in gratitude and reverence for Your constant love and guidance in our lives. We thank You for the precious gift of Your Word, as echoing through the ages are the words of Jesus in Mark 6:31, where He beckons, "Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat."
Lord, we gather before You, recognizing that in our lives we often find ourselves overwhelmed. We find ourselves inundated with responsibilities, troubles, and the relentless pace of day-to-day existence. Just as Your disciples faced a throng of people seeking their attention, we too are surrounded by demands that pull us in every direction. Help us, dear Lord, to find our own desert places where we can come apart and find Your rest.
We pray that You would give us the wisdom to hear Your call, to step away from the noise and distraction of the world around us. Teach us to cultivate that holy awareness which allows us to intentionally carve out time to be alone with You. In those quiet moments, assure us that it’s okay to set aside our to-do lists and worries so that we may focus on rejuvenating our spirits and reconnecting with You.
Father, as we endeavor to find these sacred spaces, we pray for Your presence to envelop us. Let us feel embraced by Your peace, that peace that surpasses all understanding. As we rest in the desert of our hearts, let us shed our burdens at Your feet. Grant us the grace to release our anxious thoughts, for we wish to dwell in the calm assurance that You are always in control.
May we also recognize those around us who are in desperate need of this divine rest. Help us understand how we, too, can be vessels of Your peace to others. Open our eyes to see our loved ones, our colleagues, and even strangers who are overwhelmed, who may be victims of a relentless pace in their lives. Guide us in how we can share the respite we find in You, by offering them a listening ear, an encouraging word, or simply a moment of stillness together.
Lord, we echo the longing in Your heart for our intimacy with You. Help us to prioritize this relationship above all else. For in our busy lives, it’s easy to forget the importance of taking time away to simply be in Your presence. Remind us that You are not just our Savior, but also our Friend, longing for us to share our burdens, dreams, and our very selves.
As we seek our desert places, give us strength when we are weary. Help us to discern the moments when we are trying to push through fatigue instead of acknowledging our needs for rest. Empower us to accept Your invitation - to "rest a while" - as a needed act of faith rather than a weakness.
In those times of withdrawal, Holy Spirit, we ask that You would fill us anew. Renew our spirits, restore our bodies, and refresh our minds, so that we may return to the world around us invigorated and more equipped to serve others in Your name. May we find motivation in our rest, and clarity in our quiet moments with You.
As we conclude this prayer, we hold fast to the assurance that You desire us to find joy even in simplicity, and You welcome us with open arms into those sacred times where our spirits can be rejuvenated. Thank You, Lord, for the promise of rest, both in this life and the eternal rest we will find with You. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
