Faith as a Grain of Mustard Seed: A Prayer for Belief That Moves Mountains

“And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” — Matthew 17:20

Commentary Devotional Prayer

O Lord Jesus Christ, I come before Thee with reverence and humility, thankful for Thy words that search my heart and call me upward into true trust. Thou hast spoken plainly in the Scripture, and I receive it as truth for my life: “And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” Lord, I confess that often I have seen the mountain more clearly than I have seen Thy power. I confess that I have measured my circumstance by my own strength, my own understanding, and my own resources, and I have allowed fear to speak louder than faith.

Forgive me, Lord, for unbelief—whether it appears as worry, cynicism, delay in obedience, or the quiet suspicion that my situation is too complicated for Thee. Forgive me for prayers spoken without expectation, for worship offered while my heart remains guarded, and for moments when I have limited Thee in my thoughts. Thou art not limited, and Thy word is not bound. Teach me to bring every anxious thought into submission, and to look to Thee with the simple confidence of a child.

Lord Jesus, Thou didst say, “If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed.” I bring Thee what I have—not what I wish I had, not what others seem to have, but what is present in my heart right now. Take this small seed of faith and nourish it. Cause it to grow roots deep into Thy promises, not shallow roots in emotion. Strengthen my inner man that I may believe Thee when feelings contradict, when evidence is incomplete, and when the path ahead is hidden. Let my faith be living, steadfast, and obedient.

And Lord, Thou hast spoken of mountains—those great, immovable obstacles that stand before me. I lay my mountains before Thee now: the burdens that intimidate me, the patterns I cannot break by my own will, the grief that weighs upon my soul, the strained relationships, the needs that seem beyond provision, the doors that appear shut, and the fears that refuse to be quiet. Thou knowest each one by name, even the mountains I cannot explain to anyone else. I ask that Thou wouldst teach me to speak in faith, not as one pretending, but as one anchored in Thy authority.

According to Thy word, I ask Thee to help me say unto this mountain, “Remove hence to yonder place,” not in arrogance, but in alignment with Thy will and Thy glory. Where my mind has been filled with “What if,” fill it with “Verily I say unto you.” Where my heart has repeated defeat, teach it to repeat Thy promise. Let my words agree with heaven. Let me not be double-minded, speaking faith in public and despair in private. Make my whole life a testimony that trusts Thee.

Lord, when I hear Thee say, “and it shall remove,” I ask for courage to believe that change is possible—real change, timely change, lasting change. If the mountain must move outward, then move it. If the mountain must move inward—if it is my pride, my bitterness, my stubbornness, my secret sin—then remove it from me by Thy sanctifying power. Cleanse my heart. Purify my motives. Restore my first love. Teach me to submit quickly, forgive freely, and obey fully.

And when Thy word declares, “and nothing shall be impossible unto you,” I ask that Thou wouldst enlarge my vision of Thy greatness. Keep me from presumption, but deliver me from small expectations. Let me ask in faith for what brings honor to Thy name: for holiness, for wisdom, for reconciliation, for provision, for healing, for endurance, for salvation for those I love, and for open doors to serve. Make me bold to pray, patient to wait, and faithful to follow.

Lord Jesus, I trust Thee not only for outcomes, but for companionship on the journey. Even before I see the mountain move, let me know Thy presence. Let my faith rest in who Thou art. Teach me to worship in the valley and to give thanks on the way. And when Thou dost answer, keep me humble. When Thou dost delay, keep me steadfast. When Thou dost lead differently than I imagined, keep me surrendered.

I place my life in Thy hands. Plant in me faith as a grain of mustard seed, and let it grow into mature trust that honors Thee in every season. Do in me what I cannot do for myself. And may my testimony be this: that Thy word is true, that Thou art faithful, and that in Thee the impossible yields to Thy power. In Thy holy name I pray. Amen.
