A Prayer for Discernment and Choice
"Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?" - Matthew 27:17

Heavenly Father,
As I come before You today, I am reminded of the profound moment recorded in the Gospel of Matthew 27:17, where Pontius Pilate stood before the gathered crowd and posed a question that still resonates throughout the ages: "Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?" In this simple yet weighty inquiry, I find myself drawn to reflect on the nature of choices and the weight of decisions that alter the course of our lives.
Lord, I acknowledge that each day brings forth choices—some seemingly trivial, yet others bearing the weight of eternity. Like the crowd on that fateful day, I am presented with the choice between what might be easier or more comfortable and that which is aligned with Your divine will for my life. In this moment, I ask for Your guidance, wisdom, and discernment in the choices I face.
As I meditate on the choice presented to the people, I recognize the influence of mob mentality and the sway of popular opinion over their decision. I pray, O God, that I may not succumb to the pressures of those around me, but rather seek Your counsel and follow the path that leads to righteousness, even when it is unpopular. Help me to align my desires with Your truth, reminding me that the road less traveled often leads to the greatest blessings.
Father, I see the stark contrast between Barabbas and Jesus—the embodiment of sin and rebellion against Rome versus the embodiment of truth, love, and grace. In my own life, I pray that I may continually choose to follow Christ, who offers freedom and redemption over the temptations of this world that lead to captivity. Teach me, Lord, to value the eternal over the temporal. May I never forsake my loyalty to You in favor of fleeting gratification or acceptance.
As I bring forth my decisions before You, I ask for forgiveness for the times I have released Barabbas in my own heart, choosing my own desires, pride, and ambitions over the humility and servitude that Jesus modeled. I repent for the choices that led me away from Your ways and caused harm to myself and others. Cleanse me of all unrighteousness, and help me to boldly embrace the freedom that comes with walking in Your light.
Lord, Your question echoes in my spirit today. "Whom will ye that I release unto you?" I choose You, Jesus, my Savior and King. I am reminded of Your willingness to endure suffering and despair, taking upon Yourself the sins of the world, including my own. You faced the ultimate injustice for my sake, and for that, I am forever grateful. In moments of trial, may I remember the sacrifice You made and be inspired to reflect Your love in my choices.
Grant me strength and courage to stand firm in my faith as I make decisions that honor You. Let each action and reaction to the world around me be a decision to glorify Your name, to reflect Your light, and to serve others in love. May I, too, become a source of guidance for others, helping them to discern their own choices in alignment with Your will.
In a world filled with opinions and distractions, remind me to be still before You, to listen earnestly for Your voice, and to seek the wisdom that can only come from above. Help me to remember that each choice I make influences not only my journey but also the lives of those around me. I long to embody grace and hope in each decision, just as Christ exemplified in His life.
Thank You, Lord for the reminder of this pivotal moment in history. As I navigate my own crossroads, may I ever choose Jesus, trusting in His sovereign plan and proclaiming His love to the world.
In the name of Jesus, whom I have chosen above all else, I pray,
Amen.
