A Prayer for God's Unconditional Love
"Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." - Matthew 5:43-48

Heavenly Father,
As I come before You today, my heart is humbled and my spirit is yearning for Your guidance. I find myself reflecting on the powerful words of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who taught us in Matthew 5:43-48, ‘Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.’
Lord, these words challenge the very core of my being. They call me to rise above the common standards of love and acceptance that exist in our world today. Help me, O Lord, to embrace a love that transcends feelings, circumstances, and injustices. It is easy, Father, to love those who love me and to extend kindness to friends and family. But You have called me to a higher love—a love that is inclusive, unconditional, and perhaps most importantly, sacrificial.
I confess that there are times when I struggle to love my enemies, to bless those who curse me, and to do good to those who may not treat me well. Forgive me, Lord, for the moments I have allowed bitterness and resentment to creep into my heart. Help me to remember that we are all created in Your image, and even those who oppose and hurt me are deserving of grace, just as I am.
Teach me to pray for those who have wronged me, Lord. It is through prayer that I can align my heart with Yours and cultivate compassion for others, even those who seem unlovable in my eyes. Remind me, Father, that in praying for my enemies, I am actively participating in Your divine work of reconciliation. May my prayers be filled with sincerity, asking for their well-being, for their hearts to turn to You, and for Your love to fill their lives.
Open my eyes to see the humanity in my enemies. Let me recognize their struggles and pain, giving me a heart that longs for their redemption rather than their downfall. Help me to be a source of light in their darkness, demonstrating the love that You have poured out upon me so freely. I sigh, Lord, knowing that it is only by Your grace that I can rise to this challenge. Grant me strength and courage to act in love, even when it is difficult.
In times of persecution and despitefulness, allow me to reflect Your character. You, O God, make the sun to shine on both the righteous and the unrighteous. You send rain on both the good and the evil. Help me to embody this perfect love, treating everyone with kindness regardless of their actions towards me—thus displaying the essence of Your love.
I desire to be perfect, as You are perfect, Lord. Not in my own strength, but in relying on the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling within me. Mold me into the image of Christ, who exemplified love and kindness even in the face of hatred and scorn. May my life be a testimony of Your transformative love and a beacon of hope to a world in desperate need.
As I extend love to those who mistreat me, let me not expect a reward, but instead, let me rejoice in the privilege of reflecting Your heart. Thank You for this calling to love fiercely and unconditionally. I commit myself to this mission, surrendering my heart to be perfected in love by Your grace.
In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen.

Matthew 5:43-48 - "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."
“43 ‘You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? 48 Therefore, you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.’” Matthew 5:43-48 (RSVCE)
