“Touching the Hem: A Prayer of Faith, Comfort, and Wholeness”

"And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind [him], and touched the hem of his garment: For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour." - Matthew 9:20-22

"And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind [him], and touched the hem of his garment:

Lord Jesus Christ,

I come before Thee in reverence and humility, remembering the holy testimony written in Matthew 9:20–22. Thy Word declares, “And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment.” I thank Thee that the Scripture does not hide the reality of long suffering, nor does it silence the pain of years that seem to stretch endlessly. Yet in the midst of that sorrow, Thou hast shown that hope is not exhausted by time, and mercy is not limited by human weakness.

Father, I confess that many times I have carried burdens that feel like “twelve years,” seasons of struggle, disappointment, and secret wounds that others may not see. Sometimes I have learned to smile while bleeding inwardly. Sometimes I have grown tired in well doing, tired in praying, tired in waiting. But today I choose to come near unto Thee, believing that Thou art not only able, but willing, to heal and restore.

Lord, I thank Thee for the faith Thou didst awaken in that woman—faith that rose up in her heart when everything around her had reasons to be silent and withdrawn. Thy Word says, “For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.” Grant me such faith, O God. Give me an inward declaration that does not depend upon what I see, what I feel, or what others say. Teach me to speak hope “within myself” when the enemy whispers despair. Teach me to reach for Thee when my strength is small and my courage trembles. Let my soul settle on this holy confidence: If I may but touch Thee—if I may but draw near in prayer, cling to Thy promises, and rest upon Thy power—I shall be made whole.

Lord Jesus, I praise Thee that Thou didst not overlook her touch. Thou art not distant. Thou art not distracted. Thou art not too busy for one trembling heart reaching out in secret. Thy Word says, “But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole.” O Savior, turn toward me in my need. See me fully—my hidden griefs, my private fears, my shame, my fatigue, my unanswered questions. Speak to me as Thou didst speak to her. Call me “Daughter” or “Son” by Thy grace, reminding me that I am not rejected, not forgotten, and not merely a problem to be solved, but a person to be loved.

“Be of good comfort,” Lord—let those words enter my thoughts and settle my heart. Replace anxiety with peace. Replace panic with trust. Replace self-condemnation with the assurance of Thy compassion. Where I have felt unworthy to approach Thee, remind me that Thy mercy invites the weary and the wounded. Where I have feared that my prayers are too small, remind me that even a trembling touch of faith matters to Thee.

And Lord, as Thou hast spoken, so do it again: “thy faith hath made thee whole.” Strengthen my faith—not faith in my own ability to hold on, but faith in Thy perfect power, Thy finished work, and Thy unfailing love. Heal what is broken in body, mind, and spirit. Heal the places where I have learned to cope instead of truly live. Heal the wounds that have lasted so long I have begun to believe they are permanent. Break every chain of shame and silent suffering. Make me whole in the depths of my inner man.

Thy Word declares, “And the woman was made whole from that hour.” I ask Thee for real, tangible deliverance—whether in a moment or through a faithful process—yet always by Thy hand. Let there be an “hour” of change in my life: an hour where despair turns to hope, where weakness becomes testimony, where sorrow is met with comfort, and where the touch of faith meets the power of the living Christ.

Thank Thee, Lord Jesus, that Thou art the same compassionate Savior who turns, who sees, who speaks comfort, and who makes whole. I reach for Thee now, trusting not in my worthiness, but in Thy goodness. Let my life bear witness that Thou art near to all who call upon Thee, and that faith in Thee is never in vain.

In Thy holy name I pray, Amen.
