Gracious and Eternal God,

Help us to navigate the tension between Your justice and Your mercy, for we know that You are both just and loving.

We understand that this act of judgment was commanded by You through Moses, illustrating the severe consequences of violating the commands that bind us in relationship with You. Help us, O Lord, to see this not solely as a historical account but as a lens through which we can examine the human condition. We are not immune to the errors of judgment that lead us away from Your light. Let us be mindful of our inclinations toward complacency, rebellion, and resentment. Help us, dear Lord, to uphold the spirit of Your laws in our daily lives, embracing the intention behind them rather than merely the letter.

As we contemplate the communal aspect of this story, we see how the congregation participated in the stoning.
