A Prayer of Obedience and Discernment
"And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab." - Numbers 22:21

Heavenly Father,
We come before You in humble prayer, acknowledging Your holiness and greatness. You are the Creator of the universe, the Alpha and the Omega, and we are but Your humble servants. Lord, as we meditate on Numbers 22:21, which states, "And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab," we seek wisdom and understanding from this scripture. We recognize the importance of obedience and how our choices can shape our paths.
Father, we first thank You for the gift of Your Word, which guides us through life’s complexities. This verse speaks to us of action—Balaam’s choice to rise and go with those sent by Moab highlights the importance of decisions in our lives. Help us, O Lord, to rise each day with purpose and clarity, seeking to do Your will in all that we say and do. We ask that You grant us the strength and determination to rise above our challenges, much like Balaam did.
Lord, instill in us a heart that seeks Your will over our own desires. We pray for discernment, that we may distinguish between the call of the world and Your divine calling. Balaam was approached by the princes of Moab, a significant temptation, drawing him away from the path You have set for him. Just like him, we face temptations and distractions that lead us away from Your perfect plan. Help us to discern when we are being pulled by external forces that are not aligned with Your intentions.
In our daily lives, O God, we are surrounded by influences that seek to lead us astray. Teach us to be vigilant and prudent like Balaam, who initially did seek Your counsel despite what followed. Guide us as we navigate through our relationships, our workplaces, and our communities. May we always seek to understand Your voice in every situation, so we are not swayed by the temptations of the princes of this world.
Father, we also recognize that our decisions can have profound implications. Balaam’s journey was merely a physical one, yet it spoke volumes about his spiritual journey and fate. As we saddle our own metaphorical asses each day—preparing ourselves for the journey ahead—may we do so with a spirit of prayer and supplication. Let us not rush into decisions without consulting You first. We surrender our will to You and ask that You bless our efforts with wisdom and peace.
We pray for a spirit of humility, understanding that it is only in submitting ourselves to You that we can find true guidance. Help us to recognize that like Balaam, our desires and intentions may sometimes conflict with Your will. Encourage us to pause and reflect before we act, to consider whether our actions align with Your purpose for us.
Moreover, may we learn from Balaam’s eventual missteps. When he struggled between obedience and temptation, Your messenger intervened. Lord, we ask for Your intervention in our lives too. If we stray from Your path, let Your spirit redirect us. Open our eyes to see the signs You place before us, and our hearts to respond with courage.
Lastly, we seek to be instruments of Your peace and love as we move through the world. Help us to be examples of obedience and faithfulness to those around us. As we interact with others, may our commitment to You encourage them to consider their own paths and choices.
In closing, we ask for Your guidance, protection, and wisdom. May each day be an opportunity for us to rise with purpose, saddle our asses with intention, and journey forth in Your peace. We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Amen.
