A Prayer for Wisdom and Understanding

"A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend." - Proverbs 17:18

"A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend." - Proverbs 17:{verse.verse_number}

Heavenly Father,

We come before You today, acknowledging the profound wisdom that is contained in Your Holy Word. As we reflect on the verse from Proverbs 17:18, "A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend," we realize the importance of discernment and prudence in our interactions and commitments, especially with those we call friends.

Lord, we ask for Your divine understanding to fill our hearts and minds. In a world overflowing with distractions and temptations, it is all too easy to act impulsively, to enter into agreements without full consideration of the consequences that may follow. Help us to recognize the significance of this verse, and to know that lacking understanding can lead us into situations that may bring us harm, or lead us to trust too easily in the words and promises of others.

Father, we confess that there have been times in our lives when we have acted as fools. We have struck hands in agreements, binding ourselves to obligations out of a desire to please or to be accepted, rather than seeking Your counsel and guidance. Forgive us for the moments we’ve taken shortcuts with our commitments, and grant us the wisdom to navigate our relationships with care and thoughtfulness. We desire to build healthy bonds grounded in mutual respect, understanding, and Godly wisdom.

As we ponder the meaning of becoming surety, we recognize the weight of responsibility that this entails. Being surety means standing as a guarantor for a friend's debt or obligation, placing our trust and our resources on the line for them. This act can reveal both love and friendship, but also the folly of entering commitments without proper knowledge. Teach us to carefully evaluate the commitments we make, encouraging us to be wise stewards of the relationships You have blessed us with. May we always seek counsel from You before we agree to bear someone else's burdens.

Lord, help us to discern the difference between being a supportive friend and becoming ensnared in agreements that do not align with Your will. Fill us with a heart of compassion, that we might be willing to lend our strength and assistance to those in need. Yet, grant us the wisdom to understand when it is appropriate to say no, protecting ourselves and our families from potential repercussions that might arise from agreements we are not prepared to uphold.

We also pray for our friends, and for those who might be planning to strike hands with us. May they come to an understanding of what it means to uphold their commitments, and may they seek Your wisdom as earnestly as we do. Surround us with individuals who are wise and understanding, allowing each of us to encourage one another in our spiritual growth and responsibilities.

Help us to be honest and forthright in our personal dealings, creating a culture of transparency in our friendships. Let us not be quick to make promises or commitments, but instead to take time to consider them deeply, reflecting on Your teachings and principles. In our friendships, let integrity be our hallmark, and let wisdom govern our decisions.

In closing, we humbly ask for Your support and guidance as we navigate our lives. Help us to think before we act, to consult You in prayer, and to seek understanding in all we do. Thank You, Lord, for the gift of Your Word, and for the wisdom that comes from it. We are grateful for Your never-ending love and guidance.

In Jesus' name, we pray,

Amen.
