A Prayer for Justice and Compassion for the Poor
"Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:" - Proverbs 22:22

Heavenly Father,
As I kneel before You today, I am filled with gratitude for Your unending mercy and love. I praise You for being a God of justice, who cares deeply for the oppressed and the marginalized. Your Word says in Proverbs 22:22, "Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate." This command resonates within me, reminding me of my responsibility to stand against injustice and to be a voice for those who are vulnerable.
Lord, I come before You seeking humility and awareness of the plight of the poor in our world. You have called us to be stewards of Your creation, and part of that stewardship involves caring for those who are less fortunate. Help me to look beyond my own needs and desires and to see the struggles that others face. Open my eyes to the suffering of those who feel abandoned and alone in their affliction. When I encounter someone in need, let my heart break as Yours breaks, and instill in me a profound desire to help in any way I can.
Father, I recognize that poverty is not merely a lack of material wealth, but a deep-seated condition that affects one's dignity, hope, and opportunities for a better life. Help me to understand that every person is made in Your image, deserving of respect and love, regardless of their circumstances. Teach me to treat each individual with kindness and compassion, to offer a listening ear and a helping hand, and to understand that caring for the needy is not a burden, but a privilege.
I pray for those who find themselves in poverty, facing oppression and hardship. May they feel Your presence in their lives, and may Your love pour through them, bringing hope and courage amidst their struggles. Grant them strength to persevere, and guidance to find the help they need. Surround them with people who are willing to support them in their time of need, and let them know that they are not alone.
Lord, I also pray for those in positions of power and authority — the leaders, policymakers, and decision-makers who have the ability to enact change. Convict their hearts and minds with a strong desire to serve the poor and to protect the afflicted. Help them understand the weight of their influence, and may they use it to foster justice and compassion in our communities. Give them wisdom to formulate policies that uplift the poor rather than further entrench them in distress. Let them be reminded of Your words that they will be held accountable for how they treat the least among us.
As a community, let us be proactive in our efforts to support the impoverished and afflicted. May we unite our voices in advocacy for justice, fighting against systems of oppression, discrimination, and exploitation. Help us to recognize the power of collective action, and inspire us to create environments of love and support, where the poor can find healing and restoration. When we see our neighbors in need, may we embrace them with open arms, working together to lift them up instead of looking away.
I pray that our actions reflect Your heart, Lord. Show us how to embody the love and compassion of Christ in all that we do. May we not only pray for the poor but also seek practical ways to help them. Teach us generosity, not just in resources but in spirit, so that when we have the opportunity to help, we do so selflessly and joyfully.
In the name of Jesus, who came to proclaim good news to the poor and set the oppressed free, I pray. Amen.
