A Prayer for Wisdom and Discernment in Our Interactions
"He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears." - Proverbs 26:17

Heavenly Father,
We come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your guidance and wisdom as we navigate the complexities of life and interpersonal relationships. As we meditate on Your Word, we are reminded of the profound truth found in Proverbs 26:17, ‘He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.’ Lord, help us to understand the depth of this message and how it applies to our daily lives.
Father, we often find ourselves surrounded by conflict, strife, and discord. In our desire to be helpful and supportive to those around us, there is a temptation to involve ourselves in situations that do not directly concern us. We pray that You will grant us the discernment to recognize when to engage and when to distance ourselves from matters that do not belong to us.
Lord Jesus, You taught us the importance of peace and reconciliation. Help us to embody Your spirit of peace in every interaction. Let us be peacemakers rather than meddler in the affairs that do not concern us. Remind us that sometimes the best way to support others is to allow them to resolve their conflicts on their own, as we trust in Your divine order.
As we reflect upon the metaphor of taking a dog by the ears, we understand it speaks of the danger of entangling ourselves in disputes that may hurt us or others. Enable us, dear God, to regard our words and actions carefully, ensuring that we do not provoke or escalate conflict. Help us to remember that strife can lead to unnecessary pain and division, not only for those involved but also for ourselves.
I pray, Lord, that you would instill in us a spirit of empathy and wisdom. When we observe conflict, grant us the grace to listen rather than interject, to provide comfort rather than take sides. Help us to recognize when our opinion is sought and when to simply offer support from a distance. Teach us to speak words of encouragement and to provide an atmosphere of understanding, so that we might assist in fostering peace rather than disturbance among our friends and family.
Father, we also ask for the humility to accept that some battles belong to You alone. Help us to be mindful of our limitations and to trust in Your judgment. May we be slow to anger and quick to forgive, remembering the love that You shower upon us, which is unmerited and abundant.
Lord, we acknowledge that there will always be maelstroms of strife around us, whether in social, political, or even familial contexts. Guide us to focus on our own paths without inciting quarrels or rushing to judgment. Instead, let us be instruments of Your peace, spreading love and understanding wherever we go.
We ask, Lord, that You bless our efforts to encourage healthy communication among those around us. Fill our hearts with compassion as we witness the struggles of others, so that our first instinct will be to lift them up in prayer rather than interjecting ourselves into conflicts.
We commit this prayer and our intentions to You, trusting that with Your guidance, we will not only navigate strife gracefully but also contribute positively to the peace You desire for us all. We seek Your wisdom, understanding, and strength, forever grateful for Your love and control over all situations.
In Jesus’ name, we pray,
Amen.
