A Prayer for Wisdom and Obedience

"And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!" - Proverbs 5:13

"And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!" - Proverbs 5:{verse.verse_number}

Heavenly Father,

As I come before You today, I bow my heart in gratitude for Your loving guidance and instruction throughout my life. Your Word, O Lord, is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path (Psalm 119:105). I realize that I am constantly surrounded by wisdom - wisdom that often comes from You through the teachers and mentors You have placed in my life. Yet, as the Proverb teaches us in Proverbs 5:13, ‘And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!’ I come before You with a humble heart, recognizing moments I have turned away from this voice of wisdom.

Lord, I confess that there have been times when my pride has caused me to disregard the counsel offered by those You have sent to teach me. I acknowledge that in these moments of resistance, I have strayed from the paths of righteousness and have therefore faced consequences that hinder my joy and peace. You, O Lord, call us to obedience. You urge us to heed the wisdom of our educators, our mentors, and those who have walked the road before us. I repent for those times when I have closed my ears to the learning opportunities You have graciously provided.

Please forgive me, Lord, for neglecting to seek guidance, for underestimating the knowledge and experience of those You have called to lead me. Grant me the yearning to listen and learn; weave a deep desire in my heart that appreciates and respects the teachings of my mentors. Help me cultivate a spirit that honors the wisdom they share, understanding that it is ultimately a reflection of Your eternal truth. Give me the humility to set aside my own understanding and to wholeheartedly embrace Your plan as revealed through their instruction.

Father, I earnestly ask for wisdom – the wisdom that only comes from above (James 1:5). I invite Your Holy Spirit to enlighten my mind and heart so that I may discern the voices I am to heed. Lead me to those who will share truth and clarity, guiding me in accordance with Your will. Teach me to be attentive, to listen closely, and to act courageously in accordance with the instructions that You lay before me. When I am faced with difficult choices, remind me to engage with the teachings I have received, trusting that they are rooted in love and designed to lead me closer to You.

May I develop the discipline to seek advice and instruction fervently and may my heart always be inclined towards those who are built up in Your Word, sharing insight that mirrors Your love and wisdom. I pray, Lord, that I may always be a student of wisdom, always seeking knowledge, guidance, and correction when I stray. Protect me from the arrogance that leads to folly, and help me remain humble enough to recognize the value in collective wisdom.

As I reflect on Proverbs 5:13, I realize how crucial it is to surround myself with wise counsel. May those whom I listen to be centered on Your truth, and may I always be willing and ready to receive what they carefully share. Let my life be a testimony of obedience and reverence to the voices that guide me on the path of righteousness.

In all things, Lord, I desire to glorify You through my actions and the ways in which I respond to the teachings I receive. May my life reflect the love of Christ, displaying respect and obedience to the guidance that You generously provide through the wisdom of others.

I pray this in the powerful name of Jesus, who is my ultimate Teacher and Savior.

Amen.
