Remembering We Are Dust, Trusting the Father’s Pity
“Like as a father pitieth [his] children, [so] the LORD pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we [are] dust.” — Psalms 103:13-14!["Like as a father pitieth [his] children, [so] the LORD pitieth them that fear him.

O LORD, our God, we come before Thee with reverence and holy fear, not as those who presume, but as those who need Thy mercy. We quiet our hearts in Thy presence and lift our eyes to Thee, for Thou art high and holy, yet near to the broken and the lowly. We thank Thee for the tenderness of Thy heart, for the gentleness of Thy dealings, and for the compassion that flows from Thy fatherly love.
Thy Word declares, “Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.” Lord, we cling to this truth when our consciences accuse us, when our strength fails, and when we cannot see clearly through the troubles of this life. Teach us what it is to fear Thee rightly—not with a terror that drives us away, but with a reverence that draws us near, with awe that bows the heart, with obedience that honors Thy name, and with faith that rests in Thy goodness. Let our fear of Thee be sincere, not outward only, but inward and true. May we fear Thee in secret, in speech, in decisions, in relationships, and in the unseen thoughts of the heart.
Father, we confess that we often forget how dependent we are. We strive, we worry, we harden ourselves, and we try to carry burdens that were never meant to be carried alone. Yet Thy Word speaks again: “For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.” O LORD, we are dust—weak, limited, fragile, and quickly discouraged. We are dust in our bodies, subject to weariness, sickness, pain, and the passing of years. We are dust in our minds, easily confused and overwhelmed. We are dust in our emotions, tossed by grief, anxiety, disappointment, and fear. We are dust in our spirit, prone to temptation, quick to wander, slow to pray, and often forgetful of Thy benefits.
And yet, Lord, Thou knowest our frame. Thou art not surprised by our weakness, nor impatient with our frailty. Thou rememberest. Thou dost not deal with us as an unkind master, but as a loving Father. When we are bruised, do Thou heal us. When we are ashamed, do Thou cover us with Thy mercy. When we are restless, do Thou give us Thy peace. When we are confused, do Thou grant wisdom from above. When we are weary, do Thou renew our strength, and teach us to rest in Thee.
We ask Thee, O LORD, to pity us in our battles with sin. Pity us when pride rises, when bitterness takes root, when lust entices, when anger burns, and when unbelief whispers that Thou hast forgotten us. Bring us to repentance quickly and thoroughly. Give us hearts that tremble at Thy Word, and yet hearts that trust Thy compassion. Help us not to hide from Thee, but to run to Thee, for Thou art the One who knows our frame and remembers that we are dust.
We pray for those among us who feel crushed by life’s burdens—those under financial strain, those facing illness, those grieving losses, those enduring loneliness, those caring for others with little strength left. Let them remember this promise: “Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.” Show them Thy fatherly pity in practical ways. Provide what is needed. Open doors that no man can shut. Send encouragement at the right time. Surround them with wise and compassionate help. And in the quiet places of the soul, let them sense that Thou art near.
Make us also, O LORD, to reflect Thy pity toward others. Forgive us for harsh judgments, for impatient words, for withholding kindness. If Thou rememberest that we are dust, teach us to remember that others are dust as well—frail and in need of mercy. Make us gentle, quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to wrath. Make our homes places where compassion is practiced. Make our churches places where the broken find healing. Make our lives a testimony that Thy pity is real and powerful.
And when we are tempted to despair because of our smallness, remind us that Thy pity is not weakness, but strength. Thou art the LORD who knows, the LORD who remembers, the LORD who pities. Seal Thy Word in our hearts today: “For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.” Teach us to live humbly, to pray faithfully, to obey gladly, and to hope steadily.
We surrender ourselves to Thee, trusting Thy fatherly compassion. Keep us in the fear of the LORD, and keep us under Thy tender care, until our days are complete and we stand before Thee. We ask all these things with hearts bowed and eyes lifted to Thee, resting in Thy Word and Thy mercy. Amen.
