A Prayer for Discernment and Wakefulness

"They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not;" - Psalms 135:16

"They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not;" - Psalms 135:{verse.verse_number}

Heavenly Father,

As I come before Your holy throne, I feel the weighty truth of the words found in Psalms 135:16: "They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not." Lord, I stand in awe of Your wisdom and understanding. You who created the heavens and the earth, who knows the depths of the hearts of men, I humbly ask for Your guidance and insight as I navigate a world filled with distractions and falsehoods.

Father, I acknowledge that many in this world are like those described in Your Word—having the capacity to hear, to see, yet remaining oblivious to the truths that surround them. Their mouths may utter empty words, their eyes may be open, yet they are blind. I pray that I would not find myself among them, but instead, that You would open my understanding, so that I may truly perceive the realities of Your creation and the truths of Your Word.

Lord, grant me discernment. In a time when it is easy to become confused and lead astray, I seek Your divine ability to differentiate between what is right and what is wrong. I pray for the courage to speak up when I see injustice, to share the truth of the Gospel whenever prompted, and to turn my eyes away from the distractions that lead one astray from Your pathway. May I never resemble those who have mouths to speak yet remain silent when silence is inappropriate or when truth must be proclaimed.

I also lift up those around me who are spiritually deaf and blind. Father, I pray for our loved ones, our communities, and even the nations, who may walk in ignorance of Your truth. May Your Spirit stir in their hearts, opening their mouths to speak of Your glory and directing their eyes to see the wonder of Your creation. I pray that Your light would pierce through the darkness of their understanding, allowing them to perceive the depths of Your love and the beauty of salvation through Jesus Christ.

O God, I ask for eyes that see the wonders of Your handiwork in my own life and in the lives of those around me. Help me to perceive the purpose You have woven into the fabric of our existence. Teach me to be grateful for the mundane and ordinary, for it is in these moments that Your presence is often overlooked.

Through Your Word, O Lord, You reveal the folly of those who worship idols—those who fashion gods from wood and stone, who have mouths but speak not, eyes but do not see. Let my heart be a living temple, free from the idols that seek to consume my attention. Protect me, Father, from the temptation to create false idols in my life and to invest my trust, hope, or love in anything other than You. May worship flow from my lips, may praises rise from my heart, and may my life reflect the truth and light of Your Word.

Help me, Lord, to engage intentionally with the world around me, to be a vessel for Your truth in a land that is often misled. Equip me to testify to those who are lost, offering them the hope found in Jesus, who came to give life and give it more abundantly. Let me communicate with sincerity, with a passion that reflects my love for You, and with clarity that pierces through the noise of this world.

As I meditate on this verse, Lord, remind me daily of the reality of Your presence and the truths contained in scripture. Open my eyes to Your wonders anew, and let my heart overflow with praise. I long for a mouth that speaks truth and a heart that seeks wisdom.

In the precious name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
