Night That Shines Before You: A Prayer From Psalm 139:12
"Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee." - Psalms 139:12

Most Holy and All-Seeing God,
I come before Thee in reverence and humility, blessing Thy Name for Thy perfect knowledge and unfailing presence. Thou art the Lord who seeth, the Lord who knoweth, and the Lord who abideth with Thy people in every place and in every hour. When my heart is heavy, when my mind is weary, and when my path is unclear, I lift mine eyes unto Thee and rest my soul upon Thy Word. For it is written in the Holy Scriptures, “Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.” Thou hast spoken, and Thy Word is truth.
O Lord, I confess that there are moments when I fear the darkness. There are nights when my thoughts run swiftly, when worries multiply, when sorrows revisit old wounds, and when silence feels loud. Yet even then, Thou art not distant. Even then, Thou art not confused. Even then, Thou art not overcome. Thou hast declared that “the darkness hideth not from thee.” Teach me, therefore, to stop imagining that I am unseen, forgotten, or beyond the reach of Thy mercy. Let this truth settle deeply within me, that no shadow can conceal me from Thy face, and no hidden place can keep my need from Thy heart.
Father, I bring before Thee the parts of my life I have tried to cover. The secret griefs I cannot easily explain. The burdens I carry without words. The temptations that come when I am tired and alone. The doubts that whisper when answers do not come quickly. I lay them all before Thee, for Thou already knowest them. And because Thy Word saith, “the night shineth as the day,” I ask Thee to make my darkest season a place where Thy light is found. Shine upon my understanding. Shine upon my choices. Shine upon my relationships. Shine upon the hidden motives of my heart, that I may be made clean and whole.
Lord, I also pray for those who walk in literal nights of suffering—those who cannot sleep because of pain, those who lie awake with anxiety, those who are surrounded by sorrow, those who feel trapped in depression, and those who are crushed by fear. Be Thou their comfort. Let them know that to Thee “the darkness and the light are both alike.” Where they feel powerless, show Thy strength. Where they feel alone, reveal Thy nearness. Where they feel ashamed, pour out Thy forgiveness. Where they feel confusion, grant Thy wisdom.
O God, I ask Thee to teach me to trust Thee when I cannot trace Thee. When I do not see what Thou art doing, remind me that Thou seest what I cannot. When the future is uncertain, remind me that the night shineth as the day before Thee. When my prayers seem to echo in the dark, remind me that the darkness hideth not from Thee. Let me not measure Thy faithfulness by my feelings, nor Thy presence by my circumstances. Anchor my soul in Thy unchanging truth.
Search me, O Lord, and let Thy light expose what must be surrendered. If there be pride within me, humble me. If there be bitterness within me, soften me. If there be fear within me, quiet me. If there be sin within me, cleanse me. And as Thou dost reveal, also restore. As Thou dost correct, also comfort. As Thou dost convict, also heal. Make my life a testimony that even in the night, Thou art God.
Grant me grace to walk uprightly whether my days are bright or my nights are long. Help me to speak hope to others who stumble in darkness. Help me to be patient while Thou art working. Help me to worship Thee when I see clearly and when I see dimly. For Thou art worthy in the light, and Thou art worthy in the dark, and Thou art worthy forever.
I thank Thee for this promise from Thy Word: “Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.” Let it be written upon my heart, and let it shape my faith. Keep me, lead me, and hold me fast.
In humble dependence upon Thee, I pray. Amen.
