Lift Up Your Heads, O Ye Gates: A Prayer for the Coming of the King of Glory
"Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in." - Psalms 24:7

O Lord God Almighty, the One who reigneth in holiness and majesty, I come before Thee with reverence and awe. I quiet my heart in Thy presence, and I set my hope upon Thy word. For it is written in the King James Version, “Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.” Father, I receive this call, and I answer it with my whole soul. Let the gates of my life be lifted up unto Thee. Let every door within me—every threshold of thought, desire, memory, ambition, and decision—be raised in surrender, that the King of glory shall come in.
Lord, I confess that there are times I have kept gates lowered through fear, pride, pain, and weariness. There are doors I have barred with hidden sins, guarded wounds, and unspoken doubts. Yet Thy word commandeth not that I decorate the gates, but that I lift them; not that I perfect myself, but that I open to Thee. Therefore, by Thy mercy, I yield. I lift up my head, and I lift up the gates of my heart. I lay down every excuse that keepeth me closed, and I ask Thee to enter with Thy glory.
O King of glory, come in. Come into my private places where no eye seeth but Thine. Come into my thoughts and set them in order. Come into my speech and bridle my tongue. Come into my relationships and rule with righteousness. Come into my work and establish integrity. Come into my home and fill it with peace. Come into my worship and purify it, that it may be in spirit and in truth. Thou art not a guest to be entertained, but a King to be enthroned. So I ask that every competing ruler within me be cast down—every idol of comfort, every craving for applause, every thirst for control—until only Thy lordship standeth.
Father, I pray also for the gates that stand beyond me: the gates of my family, the gates of my community, the gates of the church, and the gates of this generation. Many doors have been weighed down with despair, distraction, and bitterness; many gates have been broken by injustice and sin. Yet Thy word remaineth, saying, “Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.” Let this command be heard in our streets and in our sanctuaries. Let hearts that have been shut for years be opened in repentance. Let the weary be strengthened to lift up their heads again. Let the addicted find deliverance. Let the anxious find rest. Let the proud be humbled and the humble be exalted by Thy hand.
King of glory, bring Thy light where darkness hath lingered. Bring Thy truth where deception hath ruled. Bring Thy purity where corruption hath spread. Bring Thy compassion where hardness hath settled. Make room in us for Thy presence. Where there hath been spiritual dullness, awaken holy hunger. Where there hath been coldness, kindle love. Where there hath been confusion, speak clarity. Where there hath been division, command unity. Grant that when Thou comest in, Thou wouldst cleanse, heal, restore, and rebuild.
Lord, teach me what it meaneth that these are “everlasting doors.” Let me not offer Thee a momentary opening, only to shut Thee out when trials arise. Establish in me a steadfast spirit, that my surrender would be continual and my obedience enduring. When I am tempted to lower the gates again—through discouragement, offense, or fear—remind me of Thy word. Remind me that the King of glory is not coming to destroy me, but to reign for my good, to guide me in wisdom, and to lead me in paths of righteousness.
So now, with faith and humility, I declare Thy promise over my life: “Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.” Come in, O Lord. Reign in me. Be glorified in me. Let my life become a doorway through which others may behold Thy goodness and be drawn to Thee. I ask these things with thanksgiving, trusting not in my strength, but in Thy grace. Amen.
