O LORD, our God, we come before thee with reverence and with need, looking unto thee as our refuge, our defender, and our exceeding joy. Thou hast spoken in thy holy word, and we anchor our souls in what thou hast said. Thou hast declared, “But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.” And again thou hast promised, “For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.”

Lord, teach us what it truly means to “put their trust in thee.” We confess that our hearts are often tempted to lean upon our own understanding, to measure life by what we can control, to search for safety in what can be seen, counted, or held. Yet we turn from these fragile supports, and we place our trust in thee, the living God. Strengthen our faith where it is weak. Quiet our anxious thoughts. Deliver us from the habit of carrying burdens as though we were never meant to cast them upon thee. Help us to trust thee not only with words, but with obedience, with patience, and with a settled confidence that thou art good even when we cannot trace thy hand.

Father, according to thy word, let those that trust in thee “rejoice.” Put thy joy within us—a joy not dependent upon changing circumstances, but rooted in thy unchanging nature. Let rejoicing rise in our hearts even in the midst of trials, not because we deny our pain, but because we remember thy presence. Teach us to “ever shout for joy,” not with empty noise, but with a continual testimony that thou art faithful. Let our homes be filled with grateful speech. Let our churches be marked by holy gladness. Let our private prayers become songs of confidence, because thou hast not abandoned thy people.

We praise thee, Lord, for this great reason thy word gives: “because thou defendest them.” Thou art our defender when enemies surround us, when accusations rise, when fears press in, and when we feel weak before the challenges of life. Defend us from the snares of sin. Defend us from bitterness, pride, and unbelief. Defend our minds from lies that would distort thy character. Defend our hearts from despair that would make us forget thy promises. Defend our relationships from strife, misunderstanding, and harsh words. Where we have been wronged, keep us from vengeance and lead us into righteousness, that we might reflect thy mercy and thy truth.

Lord, make us among those “that love thy name.” Let thy name be precious to us—more than comfort, more than reputation, more than earthly gain. Teach us to love thy name in worship, in daily choices, and in secret integrity. When we speak of thee, let it be with honour. When we think of thee, let it be with adoration. When we represent thee, let it be with humility and holiness. And as thy word says, let them that love thy name “be joyful in thee.” Not merely joyful in blessings, but joyful in thee—joyful in thy wisdom, thy power, thy justice, thy mercy, and thy steadfast love.

And now, LORD, we ask thee to fulfill thy promise: “For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous.” We do not claim righteousness in ourselves, for we have sinned and come short; yet we look to thee for cleansing and renewal. Work righteousness in us by thy grace. Shape our desires. Govern our speech. Order our steps. Give us the will to do what is right when it is costly and unseen. Where we have wandered, restore us. Where we have grown weary, strengthen us. Where we have been double-minded, make us single-hearted in devotion.

Finally, Lord, we cling to this comfort: “with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.” Compass us with thy favour. Surround us on every side—before us and behind us, above us and beneath us. Let thy favour be our protection in temptation, our courage in hardship, our peace in uncertainty, and our stability in changing days. Keep us within the safety of thy will. Let thy shield be upon our families, our work, our health, our comings and goings. And when we are overwhelmed, remind us that thy favour is not fragile; it is strong as a shield, and it is thine to give.

So let our trust be steadfast, our rejoicing continual, our love for thy name deep, and our joy anchored in thee. For thou, LORD, art our defender; thou wilt bless the righteous; and with favour thou wilt compass him as with a shield. Amen.
