Wings Like a Dove: A Prayer for Rest in the Midst of Burdens (Psalm 55:6, KJV)
"And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest." - Psalms 55:6

Heavenly Father,
I come before Thee with a heart that is heavy and weary, yet still reaching for Thy presence. Thou knowest the thoughts that rise within me when troubles press in on every side, and when my soul longs for relief from the weight I carry. In the quiet honesty of my need, I bring before Thee the cry that Thy Word itself has spoken: “And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.” (Psalm 55:6, KJV). Lord, there are days when this verse feels like the truest language of my heart—days when my mind is crowded, when my spirit is anxious, when the noise of life and the strain of responsibilities feel too much for me to bear.
Father, Thou seest the burdens I cannot fully explain to anyone else. Thou knowest the pressures, the disappointments, the fears, and the sorrowful memories that return uninvited. Thou knowest the situations that feel tangled, the conflicts that drain my strength, and the needs that seem endless. And when I confess that I wish I could fly away and be at rest, I am not asking to abandon what is right; I am confessing that I am tired. I am confessing that I have reached the end of what I can manage in my own wisdom and power.
Lord, grant me the grace to bring my weariness to Thee instead of hiding it behind a brave face. Let me be truthful in prayer, not polished and distant. Teach me that even when I feel like fleeing, I may run toward Thee. When my soul whispers, “Oh that I had wings like a dove,” remind me that my safest refuge is not in escape but in Thy care. Give me a rest that does not depend on perfect circumstances, but on Thy faithful presence.
Father, I ask Thee to quiet the storm within me. Where there is anxiety, speak peace. Where there is confusion, give clarity. Where there is grief, send comfort. Where there is anger or bitterness, cleanse my heart and make me willing to forgive. Where there is fear, strengthen my faith. Where there is exhaustion, renew me with strength that is not my own. Help me to lay down the weight I was never meant to carry alone.
Lord, I also pray for the courage to continue in the path Thou hast set before me. If I cannot fly away from my circumstances, then give me the strength to walk through them with Thee. If I cannot immediately be removed from what troubles me, then grant me a resting place within my spirit—an inner stillness rooted in trust. Let my heart learn to rest, not because everything is fixed, but because Thou art near, and Thou art faithful.
Father, let this longing for rest draw me closer to Thy heart. Teach me to seek rest in Thy Word, rest in prayer, rest in worship, and rest in obedience. Help me to set aside what steals my peace: anxious striving, endless worry, and the need to control outcomes that belong in Thy hands. Shape my priorities, and guide my steps, that I may live wisely and quietly before Thee.
I ask Thee, Lord, to minister to those around me as well—those who feel trapped, overwhelmed, or worn down by sorrow and conflict. Let them too find comfort in Thy Word. Let them too be able to say with hope, even in weakness, “Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.” And let that cry become, not despair, but an invitation for Thy peace to enter their lives.
Father, I trust Thee with what I cannot change today. I place my heart in Thy hands. Carry me when I am weak. Steady me when I am shaken. Guard my mind, and keep me near Thee. And as I wait for Thy deliverance and direction, teach me to rest under the shadow of Thy care.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
