“Pouring Out Our Hearts to the Refuge of God” — A Prayer on Psalm 62:8 (KJV)

Most Holy and Everlasting God,

We come before Thee in reverence and humility, quieting our minds and steadying our wandering thoughts, that we might hear Thy word and cling to Thy promise. Thou hast spoken unto us by Thy Spirit through the psalmist, saying, “Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.” And now, Lord, we answer Thee—not with empty words, but with earnest faith, because Thy word invites us to trust, to pour out, and to rest.

Father, teach us what it is to “Trust in him at all times.” When the day is bright and our hearts are light, keep us from trusting in our own strength, our plans, or our resources. When we are tempted to believe that good circumstances are our security, remind us that Thou alone art our stability. And when the night is long—when sorrow presses down, when anxiety rises like a flood, when we feel surrounded by trouble—grant us grace to trust Thee still. Let our confidence not rise and fall with our feelings, but be anchored in Thy unchanging character. Help us to trust Thee at all times: in plenty and in want, in health and in weakness, in certainty and in confusion, in answers and in waiting.

Lord, Thy word also calls us, “ye people,” and we confess that we often attempt to carry burdens alone. We sometimes hide pain behind silence, or we speak of everything except what truly aches within. Yet Thou dost command us to come honestly, to come fully, to come without pretending. Therefore, in obedience to Thy word, we come to “pour out your heart before him.” Here, O God, is our heart—its fears, its regrets, its questions, its longings, its disappointments, its wounds that still sting, and its hopes that feel fragile. We pour out our grief over what has been lost. We pour out our weariness from battles that seem unending. We pour out our frustration when prayers seem delayed. We pour out our guilt for sins we have committed in thought, word, and deed. We pour out our concern for those we love—our families, our friends, our churches, our communities, and all who suffer.

Hear us, Lord, as we pour out not only what is heavy, but also what is holy. We pour out our praise for Thy mercies that have followed us. We pour out our gratitude for daily bread, for protection, for providence, for moments of comfort, for truth that corrects us and love that restores us. We pour out our desire to be made clean within. We pour out our longing to walk in integrity. We pour out our yearning to forgive those who have hurt us, and to seek forgiveness where we have caused harm. Make our hearts tender and sincere before Thee, for Thou dost see all things.

And now, Lord, we hold fast to the promise declared in Thy word: “God is a refuge for us.” Not merely a refuge for some, or a refuge for the strong, but a refuge “for us”—for all who come to Thee. Be our refuge when temptation calls loudly; hide us in Thee and strengthen us to obey. Be our refuge when accusations and condemnation trouble the soul; cover us with Thy mercy and lead us in repentance and renewed obedience. Be our refuge when we face decisions and do not know which path to take; grant wisdom that is pure and peaceable, and direct our steps. Be our refuge when the world feels unstable; let our hearts be steadied by the knowledge that Thou art not moved.

Lord, we ask that this refuge would not be a distant idea, but a present reality. Shelter us under Thy care. Defend us from despair. Guard our minds from relentless fear. Heal our hearts where they are broken. Lift up those who are bowed down. Restore faith where it has grown weak. Teach us to run to Thee first, not last; to pray before we panic; to worship before we worry; to trust before we try to control what we cannot.

And as Thy word ends with “Selah,” we pause before Thee. We rest in what Thou hast spoken. We reflect upon Thy faithfulness. We breathe out our striving and breathe in Thy peace. Seal this truth within us: “Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.”

So keep us, O Lord, today and in all our days, trusting Thee at all times, pouring out our hearts without shame, and abiding in Thee as our sure refuge.
