Held by Thy Right Hand: A Prayer for Guidance, Counsel, and Glory (Psalm 73:23–24, KJV)

Heavenly Father, in the holy and precious name of Jesus Christ, I come before Thee with reverence and with need. I bow my heart and mind before Thy majesty, acknowledging that Thou art God, and that without Thee I can do nothing. Thou seest all my thoughts afar off; Thou knowest the burdens I carry, the fears I hide, and the hopes I scarcely dare to speak aloud. Yet I thank Thee that even when my feelings shift and my circumstances change, Thy faithfulness remaineth sure.

Lord, I bring Psalm 73:23–24 before Thee, and I cling to Thy Word as my anchor. Thy Scripture saith, “Nevertheless I [am] continually with thee: thou hast holden [me] by my right hand. Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me [to] glory.” Father, let these words not merely be read by my eyes, but received into my soul. Let them become living truth in my daily walk.

“Nevertheless I [am] continually with thee.” Lord, I confess that I have not always lived as one who is continually with Thee. At times I have been distracted by the noise of this world, drawn away by anxieties, enticed by lesser comforts, or discouraged by trials that seem too heavy. But even when I have wandered in heart, Thy Word declares a steadfast reality: I am continually with Thee. I praise Thee that Thy presence is not fragile, and Thy nearness is not dependent upon my strength. Teach me to practice awareness of Thee—when I rise in the morning, when I labor through the day, when I speak with others, and when I lie down at night. Make me mindful that I am not alone; I am continually with Thee.

And Father, I thank Thee for the next words: “thou hast holden [me] by my right hand.” I confess my weakness, my instability, my tendency to stumble. There are moments when I feel I cannot hold on any longer—moments when grief presses in, when temptation whispers, when disappointment lingers, when confusion fogs my path. Yet Thy Word does not say that I hold Thee; it says that Thou hast holden me. What mercy and what security are found in Thy grip. Hold me, Lord, when I am tired. Hold me when my faith feels small. Hold me when I do not understand Thy ways. Hold me when I am prone to fear, and when my heart trembleth within me. Let me feel the firmness of Thy right hand, and let it quiet the shaking within my soul.

Father, according to Thy Word, “Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel.” I ask Thee for guidance that is pure, wise, and faithful. Deliver me from leaning on my own understanding, from rushing ahead in presumption, and from remaining paralyzed in indecision. Counsel me by Thy Word, and order my steps according to Thy truth. Give me discernment to know what is right, courage to do what is right, and patience to wait when the way is not yet clear. Guide my thoughts, guide my choices, guide my relationships, and guide my priorities. Let Thy counsel govern my speech, that my mouth may not outrun Thy wisdom. Let Thy counsel govern my desires, that my heart may not chase vanity. Let Thy counsel govern my plans, that my life may be shaped for Thy glory.

And Lord, I lift my eyes to the promise that stands beyond this present hour: “and afterward receive me [to] glory.” When I am weary in the journey, remind me that my story is not ending in confusion, loss, or darkness, but in Thy receiving. When I face suffering, remind me that afterward Thou shalt receive me to glory. When I encounter death, whether in the loss of others or in the awareness of my own mortality, remind me that afterward Thou shalt receive me to glory. Let this hope purify my heart, steady my mind, and strengthen my endurance. Make me faithful in the “now” because of the certainty of the “afterward.”

Father, keep me near to Thee. Keep me humble under Thy hand. Teach me to trust Thy hold when I cannot trace Thy ways. Teach me to love Thy counsel more than my preferences. Teach me to walk with Thee continually, not in occasional bursts of devotion, but in steady communion. And when I stumble, lift me; when I wander, draw me; when I fear, calm me; when I rejoice, sanctify my joy, that it may lead me deeper into gratitude.

I give Thee thanks that Thou art with me, that Thou hast holden me by my right hand, that Thou shalt guide me with Thy counsel, and that afterward Thou wilt receive me to glory. Let this promise be my comfort, my direction, and my song.
