Beholding Christ, Becoming Like Christ

"Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is." - 1 John 3:2

"Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is." - 1 John 3:{verse.verse_number}

“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” (1 John 3:2, KJV)

John’s words begin with a tender address: “Beloved.” Before we are corrected, instructed, or challenged, we are loved. The Christian life is not a climb toward acceptance; it is a walk that begins with acceptance in Christ. Then comes the startling present-tense reality: “now are we the sons of God.” Not someday. Not after you become more disciplined, more consistent, or more impressive. Now—at this moment—through faith in Jesus Christ, God has placed His name upon you and brought you into His family.

This truth speaks directly to the insecurity and striving that often mark our hearts. We may define ourselves by our failures, our past, or the opinions of others. But God’s Word defines the believer by adoption: “now are we the sons of God.” Your identity is not a fragile label you must constantly earn. It is a settled relationship God has established. When your emotions accuse you, when your progress feels slow, when you look at your weaknesses and wonder if God is disappointed beyond measure, this verse calls you back to what is already true: you belong to Him.

Yet John is equally honest about the mystery that remains: “and it doth not yet appear what we shall be.” There is a holy unfinishedness to our present experience. We are truly God’s children, and at the same time we are not yet fully what God intends. Salvation has begun its deep work, but the final unveiling is still ahead. This explains the tension believers feel—the longing to be free from sin’s pull, the groaning under weakness, the sense that life in Christ is real but not yet complete. The Bible does not deny that tension; it names it.

Then John anchors the heart in certainty: “but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him.” Christianity is not wishful thinking; it is confident hope rooted in the person and promise of Christ. The future of God’s children is not vague improvement—it is likeness to Jesus. Not becoming angels, not dissolving into some impersonal spirituality, but being made like Him in holiness and wholeness. The very One who saved you will also finish you.

Notice the timing: “when he shall appear.” Our ultimate transformation is tied to Christ’s appearing. This lifts our eyes from constant self-measurement to expectation. Many believers try to change by staring at themselves—tracking every failure, analyzing every motive, attempting to perfect their own hearts by force. John points us to a different center: Christ Himself. The decisive moment comes when “he shall appear.” God’s plan is not only to forgive you but to fit you for His presence.

And John gives a breathtaking reason: “for we shall see him as he is.” The promise is not merely that we will see Christ, but that we will see Him “as he is.” No distortion. No distance. No dimness. In this life, our vision is often clouded—by suffering, by sin, by the limits of understanding. But the day is coming when the people of God will behold the Lord with clarity. And in that beholding, we will be changed: “we shall be like him.”

This reshapes daily discipleship. If becoming like Christ is connected to seeing Christ, then even now we pursue a life of beholding Him—through Scripture, prayer, worship, and obedience. Every time we turn our gaze from lesser glories to the true glory of Jesus, we are aligning our hearts with our destiny. We practice, in small daily choices, the direction our life is heading forever.

So take courage. If you are in Christ, you are God’s child “now.” If you feel unfinished, the Word agrees: “it doth not yet appear what we shall be.” If you fear you will never change, God answers with certainty: “we know.” If the world feels unstable, your future is secured by Christ’s appearing. And if your heart longs for something pure and permanent, God promises the deepest satisfaction: “we shall see him as he is.”

Prayer: Lord, thank You that “now are we the sons of God.” When I feel incomplete and discouraged, remind me that “it doth not yet appear what we shall be,” but that Your purpose is sure. Fix my hope on the day “when he shall appear.” Teach me to behold Jesus even now, and shape my life in expectation of the moment when “we shall see him as he is.” Amen.
