Seeing Beyond the Surface: Discovering God's Chosen
"¶ And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD'S anointed is before him." - 1 Samuel 16:6

In 1 Samuel 16:6, we encounter a pivotal moment in the biblical narrative, one that echoes through the ages: “And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD'S anointed is before him.” At first glance, it seems like a straightforward observation made by Samuel, the prophet, as he arrives at Jesse’s house to anoint a new king based on God’s directive. However, behind this seemingly simple statement lies profound lessons about divine perspective, leadership, and the heart of man.
The scene unfolds amidst great turmoil in Israel, as Saul, the reigning king, has been rejected by God for his disobedience. Samuel, grieved over Saul’s unfaithfulness, is sent to anoint a new king from among Jesse’s sons. As he arrives, Samuel is faced with Eliab, Jesse’s eldest son. Eliab, tall and striking, appears to possess the qualities one would expect in a king – strong, commanding, impressive. Samuel, swayed by outward appearances, is quick to assume that this was the man God had chosen.
But God’s response to Samuel serves as a profound reminder: “For the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). In this moment, we grasp a fundamental truth about the nature of God and His criteria for choosing His leaders. While Eliab may represent the ideal leader in human eyes, God’s selection criteria are rooted in the depth of one’s character, intentions, and heart.
Samuel’s assumption reflects a common human pitfall: judging based on appearances rather than substance. In our lives, how often do we find ourselves making judgments about people based on their outward characteristics? Whether it’s their achievements, physical appearance, education, or social status, we are often drawn to those who can project strength and charisma. Yet, God cautions us against this sort of superficial evaluation. He seeks hearts that are aligned with Him, humble and ready to serve.
As we delve deeper into the implications of this scripture, it becomes clear that our society often elevates leaders and figures who possess outward success at the expense of integrity and character. God’s kingdom operates on a different wavelength. He chooses individuals who may be overlooked by society yet are faithfully walking in accordance with His will. Take David, for instance. The youngest, least likely candidate, who was out tending sheep, was ultimately the one anointed to be king. God saw in him qualities of faithfulness, courage, and a heart that sought after God.
In our personal lives, we are called to a similar reflection. Have we evaluated our aspirations through the lens of worldly success, or are we striving to cultivate a heart transformed by God? Are we mindful of the qualities that God cherishes in a leader? Qualities like humility, a servant's heart, faithfulness, and integrity?
This passage invites us to engage in introspection. It challenges us to assess whom we applaud in our lives. Do we honor those who may not fit the mold of success but show genuine love and devotion? It also implores us to examine our own hearts. In the pursuit of our ambitions, are we prioritizing God's will over man's expectations?
May we strive to see others through God’s eyes, recognizing that every person has intrinsic value and potential in the Kingdom of God. Just as Samuel learned to look beyond appearances in seeking God’s anointed, we, too, are called to discard our biases and assumptions, embracing a perspective that seeks the heart of God.
