Return to the Heart of Worship

The heart of the matter, quite literally, resides in the heart itself. 1 Samuel 7:3 presents a powerful invitation from the prophet Samuel to the children of Israel, urging them to return to God with fervent hearts.

Samuel's directive can be distilled into a threefold injunction: return to the Lord, remove the idols, and prepare your hearts. Each step is crucial in restoring one’s relationship with God, and it echoes through time to reach us today.

**Return to the Lord with All Your Hearts**

Samuel’s call to return indicates that the Israelites had strayed from their allegiance to the Lord. It also requires a sincere acknowledgment of their spiritual decline and infidelity. In a world filled with distractions and alternative ‘gods’—wealth, success, relationships, personal ambitions—many of us face the same challenge. The phrase "with all your hearts" emphasizes the requirement of totality in our devotion. As God has commanded throughout scripture, He desires not half-hearted commitments, nor does He yearn for the mere lip service of His children. God wants hearts that resonate with His love and truth. This is reflective of what Jesus calls us to in the New Testament—an undivided heart devoted to following Him (Matthew 22:37). When we return to the Lord, we do not just reinstate our relationship with Him; we also reorient our entire lives toward His will.

**Put Away the Strange Gods**

The call to remove strange gods and Ashtaroth is a reminder of the reality of spiritual warfare. These foreign gods symbolize the temptations that constantly vie for our devotion. Just as the Israelites turned to idol worship during times of distress, we too can be easily swayed by the allure of worldly comforts and desires. The act of putting away idols is not simply a physical act of disposing of objects or symbols; it is a profound surrender of our hearts and minds—an renunciation of the influences that draw us away from our Creator.

Living in a culture that tends to glorify individualism and self-fulfillment can lead to the subtle creation of idols in our lives. The challenge Samuel presents is the same for us: assess our devotion and identify the 'gods' we might be unwittingly serving. Are we putting our trust in money, popularity, or other people's opinions? In what ways do we let our hobbies or habits dictate our actions and priorities? To enjoy communion with God, we must actively remove barriers that impede our relationships with Him.

**Prepare Your Hearts unto the Lord**

Preparation involves anticipating an encounter with the divine. To prepare our hearts for the Lord means we engage in spiritual disciplines: prayer, reading scripture, worship, and fellowship with other believers. It requires a willingness to be vulnerable and honest with God, grounding ourselves in His Word while allowing the Holy Spirit to realign our perspectives.

In verses leading to our focal text, the Israelites were in a state of desperation, oppressed by the Philistines. God’s promise is clear—if they return to Him sincerely, He will deliver them. The same is true for us. Through placing Him first in our lives, He empowers us and delivers us from our struggles.

The latter part of Samuel's message holds a beautiful promise: "and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines." This prophetic assurance reminds us that when we genuinely seek the Lord, He promises to intervene in our circumstances. Our struggles, sorrows, and burdens are met by a God who is faithful to rescue those who earnestly pursue Him.

Let us reflect on our lives, take a moment to return to God, clean out the idols that subtly infiltrate our hearts, and prepare to serve Him only. In a world rife with distraction, our call to return is as pressing now as it was in Samuel's day. May we heed the call to return and experience the fullness of His deliverance.
