Behold the New: Living From Your New Creation Identity
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17, KJV)
This single verse gathers up the heartbeat of the gospel and presses it into everyday life. It does not merely offer self-improvement, a fresh start, or a polished version of who you used to be. It announces something far deeper: in Christ, God makes a person new. The phrase “if any man be in Christ” speaks of a real union—an actual belonging. To be “in Christ” is more than agreement with Christian ideas or admiration for Christian morals; it is to be placed into Christ by faith, to be joined to Him so that His life defines your life.
Notice how broad the invitation is: “if any man.” The door is not reserved for the morally impressive, the naturally disciplined, or the spiritually talented. It is open to “any man”—any person with any past, any failure, any burden of shame, any long history of sin. The gospel does not ask you to first repair yourself and then come. It calls you to come to Christ, and in Him you are changed at the root.
Paul says the one who is in Christ “is a new creature.” That means Christianity is not first about turning over a new leaf; it is about receiving a new life. God does not only adjust behavior; He transforms the inner person—your identity, your spiritual condition, your standing before Him. A “new creature” suggests God’s creative power, the same kind of power that speaks into darkness and produces light. When you are in Christ, you are not defined by what you have done, what has been done to you, or what others have said about you. You are defined by God’s work in you.
Then comes a freeing declaration: “old things are passed away.” “Old things” includes the guilt that clings to remembered sin, the former ways of living that once ruled you, the hopeless patterns you assumed would never change, and the old identity built on pride or despair. This does not mean you will never feel the pull of old habits or never face temptation. It means the old order—the old master—no longer has the rightful claim it once had. In Christ, the verdict over your life is not condemnation but redemption. The past may still be remembered, but it is no longer your prison. It becomes a testimony of what grace has carried you through.
Paul does not stop with what is gone; he points to what has arrived: “behold, all things are become new.” The word “behold” is an invitation to look again—to pay attention—to see yourself, your future, and even your daily struggles through the lens of God’s renewing work. “All things” does not mean every circumstance suddenly becomes easy or pain-free. It means the whole direction of your life changes. Your relationship to God becomes new: you are no longer distant, but brought near. Your relationship to sin becomes new: what once felt normal now grieves you, and what once seemed impossible—obedience—becomes a real pursuit by God’s enabling. Your relationship to purpose becomes new: you are not merely surviving, but learning to live as one who belongs to Christ.
This verse also offers tender honesty for the believer who feels discouraged. If you are “in Christ,” you are already a “new creature,” even when your emotions lag behind that truth. Growth is often gradual, and renewal can be fought for in prayer, repentance, and daily dependence. Yet the foundation remains steady: God has begun something real. The old has been dethroned. The new has been established.
Let 2 Corinthians 5:17 shape the way you wake up and face the day. When shame speaks, answer it with what God has said: “old things are passed away.” When temptation claims you will never change, answer it: “he is a new creature.” When the future feels uncertain, look up and “behold” that “all things are become new.” In Christ, you are not trapped in who you were. You are being formed into who God has made you to be.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank thee that in thee I am made new. Help me to believe thy word when I feel the weight of old things. Teach me to walk as a new creature, turning from what is past and embracing the life thou hast given. Let me behold thy renewing work in me day by day. Amen.
