Access Granted: Embracing Our Relationship with the Father
"For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father." - Ephesians 2:18

Ephesians 2:18 offers a powerful reminder of the incredible access we have to God: "For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father." This verse encapsulates the core of our faith—our relationship with the Father, made possible through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. It invites us to reflect on the intimacy we can experience with God, a relationship forged through the sacrifice and resurrection of His Son.
To fully understand the depth of this verse, we must acknowledge the significance of the words "through him"—referring to Jesus Christ. It is vital to remember that prior to Christ, our access to the Father was hindered by sin and separation. The Old Testament reveals a picture of a distant God, where access to Him was limited and contained within the confines of the temple, accessible only to a select few. The high priest could enter the Holy of Holies only once a year, and even then, with fear and trembling. But through Christ's ultimate sacrifice on the cross, that veil was torn, symbolizing the breaking down of barriers that once existed between us and God. Isaiah 59:2 tells us, "But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.” Jesus dismantled these barriers so that we can enter into His presence confidently.
The phrase "we both have access" is incredibly significant as it reminds all of us—Jew and Gentile, rich and poor, all races and backgrounds—that access to God is available to everyone. The apostle Paul, writing to the Ephesians, was addressing a diverse community, emphasizing that in Christ, our differences are erased, and we are united as one family in God’s eyes. Regardless of who we are or where we come from, we can approach the Father boldly. Paul reiterates this theme in Galatians 3:26-28, where he states, “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, neither bond nor free, neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.”
Access to the Father is not just a privilege but also a profound responsibility. Our connection to the Father through Christ means that we are called to live out our faith in a way that reflects His love, grace, and justice. The mention of "one Spirit" emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives, guiding us and helping us maintain our relationship with God. The Holy Spirit serves as our Comforter, Advocate, and Helper, continually pointing us towards the truth of God’s Word, revealing deeper layers of His character, and leading us into all truth (John 16:13). Our communication with the Father is also facilitated by the Spirit, who intercedes for us even when we struggle to find the words to pray (Romans 8:26-27).
In reflecting upon the access we have to God, we ought to ask ourselves how we are utilizing this incredible privilege. Do we take the time to communicate with Him in prayer? Are we eager to listen to Him through His Word? The availability of God invites us to draw near, yet many times we are distracted or hesitant. Let us remember the invitation of James 4:8, "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you." Our relationship with the Father should be active and dynamic, a daily communion where we can lay our burdens at His feet and receive His wisdom, comfort, and guidance.
As we meditate on Ephesians 2:18, let us strive to fully embrace our identity as children of God who have been granted no less than direct access to our Heavenly Father. May this truth empower us to walk boldly in our faith, share this good news with others, and reflect the love of Christ in our interactions with the world around us.
