When Glory Breaks In: Falling on Our Face Before the Throne

"And above the firmament that [was] over their heads [was] the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne [was] the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it. And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about. As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so [was] the appearance of the brightness round about. This [was] the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw [it], I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake." - Ezekiel 1:26-28

“And above the firmament that [was] over their heads [was] the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne [was] the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it. And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it… As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so [was] the appearance of the brightness round about. This [was] the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw [it], I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.” (Ezekiel 1:26–28, KJV)

Ezekiel’s first vision does not begin with practical instruction, a list of tasks, or a plan for survival in difficult times. It begins with a throne. Before the prophet is told to speak, to go, to warn, or to endure, he is shown that God reigns. “Above the firmament… was the likeness of a throne” (v. 26). That word “above” matters. Ezekiel is living among exiles, far from the familiarity of Jerusalem, surrounded by loss and upheaval. Yet the vision insists that the highest reality is not Babylon’s power, not Israel’s ruin, and not the chaos of displacement. The highest reality is the throne of God.

The throne is described “as the appearance of a sapphire stone” (v. 26). Scripture often uses imagery rather than measurements when speaking of heavenly glory, because God’s majesty cannot be reduced to ordinary categories. Sapphire suggests purity, depth, and an unearthly beauty—something solid and splendid, not fragile or fading. For the weary heart, this becomes a quiet anchor: God’s rule is not improvised. His dominion is not an emergency response. It is radiant, established, and steady.

Ezekiel then sees “the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it” (v. 26). God is spirit, yet He reveals Himself in forms that humans can recognize without being consumed. In this vision, the Lord communicates that He is not a distant force or cold principle; He is personal. He is not merely an idea of sovereignty; He is the Sovereign. And His rule is not detached from humanity—He condescends to reveal Himself in a way Ezekiel can apprehend. Even in exile, God is not unreachable.

The prophet continues: “as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it” (v. 27). Fire in Scripture speaks of holiness, purity, and power. It warms, it illuminates, and it refines—but it also judges what cannot endure its presence. Ezekiel’s vision reminds us that the glory of the LORD is not casual. We cannot domesticate God into a comforting accessory for our plans. His brightness confronts us. His holiness exposes us. If we want the nearness of God, we must also welcome the cleansing of God.

Yet the vision is not only terrifying; it is also beautiful. “As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain” (v. 28). The rainbow calls to mind mercy—an emblem of God’s faithfulness even after judgment. Ezekiel sees fire and brightness, but also a bow in the cloud. In other words, holiness and mercy are not competing traits in God; they are harmonized in His glory. The Lord is not less holy when He is merciful, and He is not less merciful when He is holy.

Then comes the only human response that fits: “And when I saw [it], I fell upon my face” (v. 28). True encounters with God produce humility. Not performance. Not self-confidence. Not negotiation. Worship. Surrender. Reverence. Ezekiel does not first analyze the vision; he yields to it. He is undone by the weight of what he has seen.

But the vision does not end with Ezekiel on the ground. It continues: “and I heard a voice of one that spake” (v. 28). This is the tenderness of divine revelation: God shows His glory, and then He speaks. He does not crush the prophet; He commissions him. The Lord’s voice follows the Lord’s glory.

In daily life, we often want God’s guidance without God’s grandeur. We ask for direction, but we rush past adoration. Ezekiel 1:26–28 calls us back to the right order. First, behold the throne—God is in control. Second, bow low—God is holy. Third, listen—God still speaks.

Prayer: Lord, lift my eyes above my circumstances to see that there is a throne “above the firmament.” Teach me to tremble and trust at once—to fear Your holiness and to rest in Your mercy. Bring me to the place where I fall on my face, and then give me grace to rise and obey when I hear “a voice of one that spake.” Amen.
