Laughter of Faith: Finding Joy in the Impossible
“Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?” — Genesis 17:17
When we delve into Genesis 17:17, we encounter a profoundly human moment: "Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?" This verse encapsulates the tension between divine promise and human skepticism, a theme prevalent throughout scripture and relevant to our own lives today.
At this point in the biblical narrative, Abraham is no stranger to God’s incredible promises. He has been called to leave the familiarity of his homeland, journey into uncharted territory, and become the father of a great nation. Yet, the promise of a child at such an advanced age seems unfathomable. Abraham's laughter is not mere incredulity—it's also a profound reflection of his journey of faith, marked with doubt, periods of waiting, and divine revelation.
Abraham’s laughter can be interpreted in several ways; it embodies joy, disbelief, and a poignant self-awareness of his limitations. In a world chronicled by endless opportunities and fierce competition, we often measure our lives against societal expectations. The prospect of truly embracing the impossible—be it dreams fulfilled at an advanced age, healing from disease, or restoration of relationships—can lead us into a pit of doubt, just as it did Abraham.
It is essential to understand that Abraham’s laughter happens in the context of worship. He falls on his face before God—this is an act of submission, reverence, and acknowledgment of God’s absolute sovereignty. Humbling oneself in prayer, recognizing our limitations against God’s infinite power, is a critical aspect of our faith journey. To fall on our faces before God implies a recognition that while we may struggle with disbelief or the absurdity of a promise, we are still in pursuit of faith in His character and ability.
God’s response to Abraham's laughter reveals His grace and assurance. Though Abraham laughed out of doubt, God's promise remained steadfast. He understood not only the nature of human emotion but the depth of Abraham’s heart. God followed this encounter with reaffirmation of His covenant, reminding Abraham that His plans are never hindered by human incapacity.
As we reflect on this narrative, we must confront our own doubts and uncertainties. What promises has God made to you that seem too good to be true? Are there areas in your life where you feel the weight of impossibility? Maybe it’s the dream of reconciliation in a broken relationship, the hope of restoration for your health, or the aspiration for a child or career when the seasons of life seem stacked against you.
We must remember that faith sometimes coexists with our humanity. Abraham's laughter exemplifies the duality of faith—recognizing our limitations while yet believing God is capable of the miraculous. Laughter in the face of despair can transform our skepticism into a vibrant testimony of faith when we choose to trust in God’s purpose and timing.
In moments of laughter, whether in disbelief or joy, we can turn our hearts back to God. Instead of contending with our doubts alone, let us bring our laughter—both of cynicism and joy—before the Lord. For He delights in our honesty and longs for us to know that He is not deterred by our inability to see with faith.
So today, let us embrace the laughter of faith. Let us humbly admit where we struggle and celebrate where we see the hand of God at work. In surrendering our doubts, we may find that God births new dreams and possibilities beyond what we could ever fathom, just as He did for Abraham and Sarah.
