In Joshua 10:4, the plea is clear: "Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel." This verse paints a vivid picture of desperation and strategic alliance in the context of ancient warfare but serves a more profound purpose for us as believers in modern times.

This episode is set against a backdrop of incredible tension and conflict. The Gibeonites, recognizing the might of Israel under Joshua's leadership, resorted to ruse and deception to forge a peace treaty with them. They dressed in shabby clothes and traveled from afar to present themselves as humble outsiders seeking refuge (Joshua 9). By making peace, Gibeon aligned itself with Israel, which would become a thorn in the side of the five Amorite kings. In their eyes, the Gibeonites had betrayed the Amorite cause, and for this reason, they sought to exterminate them.

When we meditate on this text, we see a powerful truth emerge: the importance of unity among God's people, especially in times of distress. The call to "Come up unto me, and help me" resonates not just as a military rallying cry but beckons a deeper understanding of community and collective effort. The functioning of the body of Christ resembles the interactions of the ancient tribes of Israel. Paul, in his epistles, consistently emphasizes the need for unity, reminding us that each member of the body has a purpose, which is only fulfilled when they work together harmoniously (1 Corinthians 12:12-26).

When facing challenges, whether personal or communal, we often feel overwhelmed. Just as the five kings approached their allies for support, we should not hesitate to reach out to our brothers and sisters in Christ when we are besieged by the battles of life. There is a spiritual strength found in unity. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 states, "Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.” This highlights the essential relationship we must cultivate within our communities.

Moreover, here, Joshua represents a leader desperately in need of support for a righteous cause. His mission was not just about defeating Gibeon; it was about upholding the covenant that had been established with God by protecting their newfound allies. Today, we too are called to be defenders of peace and unity in the name of Christ. In a world rife with division and strife, we are urged to foster relationships built on trust, respect, and the shared mission to reflect God’s love.

The opposition Joshua faced, viewed as an outright assault against his choice to forge a treaty with Gibeon, teaches us much about enduring criticism in our walks of faith. Sometimes, our efforts for peace and unity may be met with hostility and aggression. However, just as Joshua rallied together his allies to defend a cause greater than themselves, we must prepare to stand firm in our beliefs and online community — against the hostility of a world often vying to pull us apart.

Finally, when the call comes, and it surely will come in various forms, let us answer joyfully with vigor to "come up"—to rise to the challenge of unity and action.
