Joshua 13:13 reads: "Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Geshurites, nor the Maachathites: but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day." As we set the stage, we meet the children of Israel, who at this point have achieved significant victories in their journey to conquer the Promised Land. Yet, despite their successes, there lingers a troubling reality: they did not complete what they had set out to achieve regarding the Geshurites and Maachathites. These two peoples were remnants of the Canaanite nations that God had commanded Israel to expel. In Deuteronomy 7:2, God instructed them to "utterly destroy" these nations so they would not lead Israel astray through idolatry and immorality. But instead, here is Israel allowing these inhabitants to remain within their borders.

This incident in Joshua teaches us about the dangers of compromise. How often do we find ourselves in situations where, instead of holding fast to God’s commands and principles, we allow small concessions that can lead to bigger issues? One might wonder why God allowed Israel to live with the Geshurites and Maachathites. It was an opportunity for them to remember their calling and to remember the cost of not fully obeying God’s word. The reality is, God gives us free will; He allows us to choose whether we will align our lives with His perfect vision for us. The presence of these nations among the Israelites was both a testament to Israel's failure to follow through and a call to discernment and vigilance.

In confronting the remnants of our sins and compromises, God invites us to re-examine our hearts. 2 Corinthians 13:5 states, "Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves." This introspection is vital in recognizing and expelling the Geshurites and Maachathites of our own lives.
