In the book of Joshua, we witness the unfolding of God’s promises to His people. When we arrive at Joshua 19:3, we find an intriguing passage that reads: "And Hazar-shual, and Balah, and Azem," (KJV). At first glance, these names may seem like mere geographical markers, mere names on a map of ancient Israel. However, each name carries with it a story, a history, and perhaps, a lesson for us today.

Hazar-shual, translated as “the village of foxes,” signifies a place that perhaps once thrived under the covenant blessings of God. In this densely populated area, surrounded by lush lands, one can visualize the rabble of activity, the buzz of community life, and the hustle of daily commerce. But what does it mean for us?

Hazar-shual reflects the promise of abundance and productivity that God extends to His people. In the same way, He calls us to a fertile spiritual place. The names and places we encounter may be unfamiliar, yet they serve a greater purpose as chains of memory invoking the fulfillment of God’s promises. It prompts us to reflect on the areas of our life where God is cultivating fruitfulness. Are we sowing seeds of faith, love, and hope in the various “Hazar-shuals” of our lives? Or are we allowing distractions to stifle growth?

Next on the list is Balah, which means “to consume” or “to waste.” Within this name, we discover the reality of choices made that lead to destruction rather than creation. As we ponder Balah, we should consider the choices we make. Are we consuming our time, relationships, and resources on fleeting pleasures that lead us to spiritual wastelands?

In our fast-paced lives, it's easy to lose sight of what truly matters and become embroiled in the distractions that consume us. Mindfulness allows us to differentiate between being consumed by the world and being filled with the Spirit. Are we collapsing into despair or pursuing the things of eternal value? The name Balah serves as a warning against leading a life that leads to waste and invites all of us to refocus our attention on Christ, who came to give us life abundantly (John 10:10).

The third name, Azem, means “mighty” or “strong.” How befitting to close with a name that suggests strength. There is profound power in recognizing the mighty works of God in our lives. It serves as a powerful reminder that, while we may feel consumed at times, God is calling us to find our strength in Him. In Isaiah 40:31, we are reassured that "they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."

In these three locations named in Joshua 19:3, we observe a cycle: God gives us places of abundance (Hazar-shual), there are choices that can lead us astray (Balah), but ultimately, we have access to the strength that can renew us (Azem). As God’s people, we are encouraged to be mindful of how we navigate our lives, which places we cultivate in our hearts, and how we seek the strength that is only found in Him.
