In Mark 10:42-45, we encounter a powerful lesson on leadership and service as taught by Jesus:

"But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many."

In this passage, Jesus turns conventional views of power and authority on their head. It’s a direct challenge to the societal structures of His time – and even of our own contemporary culture. The rulers of the Gentiles exercise authority and often leverage their power for personal gain, but Jesus critiques this behavior. Instead, He sets an example of radical humility and service as the true markers of greatness.

To begin with, it is important to reflect on what Jesus meant when He spoke of rulers who exercise lordship and authority. In the worldly sense, greatness is often achieved through domination, control, and a sense of superiority. Leaders often seek to elevate themselves above others, wielding their influence and power to maintain their status. However, Jesus implies that this approach is fundamentally flawed and contrary to the kingdom of God.

Jesus then presents an alternative vision for greatness, emphasizing that true leadership arises from a posture of servitude. "But whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister." The word ‘minister’ here refers to serving. This is radical – a flipping of the script. Greatness, according to Jesus, is less about titles and more about the heart’s condition.

So how do we reconcile this teaching with our own ambitions? Many of us are driven to achieve great things, whether in our careers, ministries, or personal lives. While ambition is not inherently wrong, it becomes problematic when we measure our worth by how many are under us rather than how many we serve. To embrace leadership as Jesus defines it, one must willingly take on the role of a servant, humbling oneself to the needs of others.

When Jesus states, "For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister," He offers Himself as the ultimate example. The Son of Man – a title that echoes His humility and willingness to engage with mankind – serves humanity so profoundly that He gives His life as a ransom. This was not a minor sacrifice; it was everything. His life’s purpose was not to demand reverence or service but to embody the spirit of service, laying down His life for the sake of others.

In our daily lives, this challenges us to rethink our interactions and motivations. Are we seeking positions of authority for our own recognition, or are we willing to influence and lead through service? It beckons us to question: who in our lives requires our attention, service, and love? In our workplaces, families, and communities, how often do we prioritize elevating others over ourselves?

The call to be the chief servant is not easy. It requires sacrifice and a continuous self-reflection on our motives. It involves recognising opportunities around us to serve, whether that means stepping in to help a colleague, volunteering our time to assist a friend, or simply listening to someone in need. This approach reshapes our reality and in turn, can transform the environments we influence.

As we meditate on Mark 10:42-45, let us reflect on how we can embody the heart of true leadership today. In every action, may we echo the sacrifice of Christ, giving selflessly as we serve others. It is in this beautiful cycle of giving that we find true greatness and fulfillment in our lives.
