Beyond the Words: Living the Will of the Father
“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” — Matthew 7:21
The verse Matthew 7:21 reminds us of a sobering truth about our faith and our relationship with God: "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven." Here, Jesus emphasizes that mere verbal acknowledgment of His lordship is not enough for entry into His eternal kingdom. This passage compels us to explore the deeper implications of obedience and the authenticity of our relationship with Christ.
In the context of the Sermon on the Mount, where this verse is found, Jesus provides a profound teaching that transcends ritualistic religion. He guides us to understand that faith must have corresponding actions. We live in a culture that celebrates profession over practice and rhetoric over reality. Many declare Jesus as Lord, yet their lives tell a different story. Thus, this verse stands as a mirror reflecting our spiritual condition, demanding a sincere evaluation of our commitment to Christ.
To truly grasp the meaning of this scripture, we must dissect two components: the confession of faith and the demonstration of faith. The first part indicates that recognizing Jesus as Lord is essential—it acknowledges His authority, divinity, and the necessary dependence of our lives on Him. However, the latter part highlights a critical truth: our words must be accompanied by actions. The apostle James reinforces this in James 1:22, where he writes, "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves." If we only profess Christ without living out His teachings, we may be deceiving ourselves about our salvation.
The ‘will of my Father’ is crucial for understanding this passage. What does it mean to do the will of the Father? Throughout the Gospels, Jesus makes it abundantly clear that His Father’s will involves love, obedience, service, and righteousness. In John 14:15, He eloquently states, "If ye love me, keep my commandments." This obedience must stem from a sincere love for Him and for the brethren, reflecting the very essence of the kingdom values He preached.
In practical terms, doing the will of the Father requires an intentional and conscious effort to align our lives with God’s desires expressed in His Word. It calls us to action in our communities—to feed the hungry, to care for the orphans and widows, to forgive our enemies, and to practice humility. Jesus lived this will out every day of His life, setting the ultimate example for us. He did not walk around just saying, "Lord, Lord," but actively demonstrated His love through service, sacrifice, and submission to the Father’s will.
Observing the culture around us, we recognize a tendency toward superficial spirituality. People can often be caught in a cycle of repetitive worship services and affirmations without any genuine commitment to embody what that worship means. Challenges arise with societal distractions, the lure of individualism, and a propensity for complacency that can suffocate our spiritual fervor. We begin to bury our spiritual lives under layers of activity that may appear Christian but lack true heart engagement with Jesus.
As we contemplate this verse, let us ask ourselves: Are we diligently pursuing the will of our Father? Does our lifestyle reflect our proclamation of Jesus as Lord? It is crucial to cultivate a relationship with Christ that motivates us to action and reflects His heart. God desires not just our words but our deeds—the evidence of the faith we profess.
Thus, let us commit ourselves anew to being doers of His Word. Let us tread the narrow path that leads to life, one marked by a constant effort to align our will with His, driven by a love that radiates to those around us. As we do so, we will have the assurance that our voices proclaiming "Lord, Lord" are followed by lives that manifest the transformative power of His grace. In this way, we shall enter the glorious kingdom of heaven, not merely by profession, but by the evidence of a faithful life lived under His Lordship.
