The Power of Delegation: Embracing Collective Leadership
“And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee.” — Numbers 11:16
In Numbers 11:16, we find a pivotal moment in the life of Moses as a leader: "And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee."
This verse marks a significant transition in the leadership structure of the Israelites. Moses had been carrying the weight of leadership all by himself, and God recognized that this burden was too great for one man to bear alone. In response, the Lord instructed Moses to gather seventy elders, men who were already recognized for their leadership within the community. This act of gathering together is not mere logistics but a profound lesson in the importance of shared leadership and community involvement.
Moses’ leadership up until this point was primarily characterized by his direct relationship with God and his role as a sole leader who spoke on behalf of the Israelites. However, God’s command to gather others reflects His understanding that collective leadership is essential for the health and effectiveness of any group or nation. By empowering the elders, God was inviting them to take an active role in governing the people, thereby lightening the burden upon Moses and allowing a broader representation of the community's needs and concerns.
The significance of the number seventy is not arbitrary either; it signals completeness and divine order. In the ancient Near East, seventy was recognized as a number symbolizing effectiveness in governance and was often associated with the nations. By involving elders from various tribes, it ensured diversity and balance, allowing for a more comprehensive approach to leadership and decision-making.
As we reflect on this scripture, it raises essential questions for us in our personal lives, within our churches, and communities: Are we attempting to shoulder burdens on our own, or are we willing to share them with others? Are we recognizing the strengths and gifts of those around us and fostering an environment where they can step into their God-given roles?
In the New Testament, the principle of delegation continues to resonate strongly. Jesus Himself, understanding the limitations of even His own earthly ministry, called forth disciples who walked alongside Him, participated in His mission, and ultimately were empowered to continue the work after His ascension. This biblical model compels us to reevaluate our styles of leadership. Whether in ministry, family, business, or community, we are reminded that effective leadership involves empowering others rather than merely executing tasks alone.
Moreover, God’s call to gather the elders also teaches us about the importance of community. The Lord didn’t simply tell Moses to find these leaders in isolation; He directed him to the tabernacle—the place of meeting, worship, and divine presence. When leadership happens in community, when we gather together around God’s presence, we can seek His guidance collectively. This not only brings unity but also furthers accountability, wisdom, and encourages prayerful discernment as decisions are made.
In our modern-day churches and communities, the cases of burn-out and spiritual fatigue may often point to lone leaders striving to carry the weight of accountability and responsibility by themselves. This divine blueprint given to Moses encourages us to identify and raise up leaders among us. Leaders who are equipped not only by experience but by the Spirit of God to aid in ministering to the needs of others.
Let us pray for God to reveal in us both the willingness to lead when called and the humility to gather and raise others to lead alongside us. May we acknowledge that God calls each of us into His mission and that together, we can accomplish far greater things than on our own. In doing so, we not only bear our burdens but also empower others to engage in the work of His kingdom. We are reminded that leadership, as established by God, thrives in community, echoes strength in numbers, and is rooted in His presence.
