Girded With Strength, Set Upon High Places

“[It is] God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. He maketh my feet like hinds’ [feet], and setteth me upon my high places.” (Psalm 18:32–33, KJV)
Psalm 18 is a song of deliverance, and these two verses place the spotlight where it belongs: not on the psalmist’s grit, but on God’s gracious power. David does not say, “I finally became strong,” or, “I figured out the right path.” He testifies, “[It is] God that girdeth me with strength.” Strength is not merely something God gives in passing—it is something He fastens around His servant. To be “girded” is to be prepared, secured, and supported. God does not only supply strength for a moment; He outfits His people with what they need to stand, endure, and move forward.
This matters because many of our battles are not lost for lack of intention; they are lost for lack of strength. We begin with resolve and end with fatigue. We plan well and then encounter resistance—temptation, discouragement, pressure, delays, misunderstanding, or grief. In those moments, Psalm 18:32 invites a confession of dependence: the strength required is not self-manufactured. If God girds you, then you can stop pretending you are self-sustaining. You can pray honestly, “Lord, I am weak,” without fear that your weakness disqualifies you. The verse quietly implies the opposite: weakness becomes the very place where God’s strengthening is experienced.
The second phrase is equally humbling: God “maketh my way perfect.” In everyday life, our “way” includes decisions, relationships, responsibilities, and the unseen motives that shape our steps. “Perfect” does not necessarily mean painless or simple; it speaks of God making the path complete, whole, and rightly ordered. David’s life was not a straight line. He knew caves, conflict, and waiting. Yet he could testify that God was able to take a complicated story and make it a “perfect” way—one that fits God’s purpose. This gives hope when your path feels messy. God is not limited by the detours you regret or the obstacles you did not choose. He is able to set your feet back onto a faithful course, to refine your priorities, and to align your steps with His will.
Then comes the vivid picture: “He maketh my feet like hinds’ [feet].” A hind is sure-footed on steep terrain, able to move with agility where others slip. God does not always remove the mountains; often He changes the way we traverse them. Sometimes we ask for a different landscape, but God answers by giving different feet—stability, spiritual balance, and courage. This is a quiet miracle of sanctification: over time, what once made you stumble becomes terrain you can navigate with wisdom. The same pressures that previously knocked you down become opportunities to practice patience, discernment, and trust. When God makes your feet like hinds’ feet, He gives you the ability to stand in places you once feared.
Finally, David says God “setteth me upon my high places.” Notice the direction: upward. High places suggest vantage point, safety, and victory, but they also suggest responsibility. From higher ground you can see farther; you can recognize threats earlier; you can guide others more wisely. Yet you do not climb there by pride. God “setteth” you there. Any spiritual elevation—greater maturity, clearer purpose, deeper peace—is not a trophy for the self-reliant; it is a placement by the Lord.
Taken together, these verses teach a steady pattern for the believer’s life: God strengthens, God orders the way, God stabilizes the steps, and God places us where He wants us. Your calling, your endurance, and your progress are not ultimately the result of your own ability; they are the fruit of God’s faithful action.
Consider how to respond today. If you feel weak, ask God to gird you with strength. If you feel uncertain, ask Him to make your way perfect. If you feel unsteady, trust Him to make your feet like hinds’ feet. And if you feel stuck in low ground, wait with hope—He is able to set you upon your high places in His time.
Prayer: Lord, it is You that girdeth me with strength. Make my way perfect. Give me sure feet where the path is steep, and set me where You will be most glorified in my life. Amen.
