A Prayer for Stewardship and Generosity
"But Jehoiada the priest took a chest, and bored a hole in the lid of it, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one cometh into the house of the LORD: and the priests that kept the door put therein all the money that was brought into the house of the LORD." - 2 Kings 12:9

O Heavenly Father,
We come before You today with humble hearts, acknowledging Your greatness and the magnificent work You have done throughout history, as seen in the pages of Your Holy Word. We reflect on the wisdom displayed through Your servant Jehoiada, the priest, during a time of great need in the Temple, as illustrated in the scripture from 2 Kings 12:9: "But Jehoiada the priest took a chest, and bored a hole in the lid of it, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one cometh into the house of the LORD: and the priests that kept the door put therein all the money that was brought into the house of the LORD."
Lord, we praise You for the leadership that Jehoiada provided in his time. May we learn to lead with a spirit of integrity and purpose, ensuring that we prioritize the service of Your house and the care of Your people. Help us to take action when we see needs—whether they be spiritual, physical, or emotional. For it is written that faith without works is dead (James 2:26), and we desire to put our faith into motion as Jehoiada did for the glory of Your Kingdom.
As we reflect on the chest that Jehoiada prepared and set beside the altar, we recognize that You have also called us to be vessels of Your goodness and grace. You have entrusted us with treasures of wisdom, love, and still, material resources. Help us to approach our lives with a spirit of stewardship and generosity. Teach us to set aside our own desires and to give willingly, much like the priests who put forth their offerings to sustain the work of the Temple.
Lord, instill in us a desire to give from the overflow of our hearts, as we consider what it means to contribute to Your work within our church and communities. May we think of the needs of others before our own. Just as Jehoiada made room for offerings to flow into the Temple, may we create spaces in our lives—of both time and resources—for generosity to blossom. Remind us that every act of kindness, no matter how small, can have a profound impact on those around us.
Father, help us to recognize the importance of coming together as a congregation to support the mission of spreading Your Gospel. Just as the priests diligently collected the offerings brought to the house of the LORD, let us work in unity, sharing our gifts and talents to build up the body of Christ. May our churches become like that chest—vehicles that actively facilitate the giving process, making it easier for each member to contribute to the work of Your Kingdom.
We also pray for the wisdom of Jehoiada in our leadership. May we be guided by Your Holy Spirit as we make decisions regarding our resources—choosing to invest in missions, outreach, and caring for those in need. Help us to be ever aware of the needs around us and grant us the bravery to respond with compassion and action.
Lord, let us not forget the promise that comes with giving: that You love a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). May our contributions not be out of obligation or grudgingly given, but rather flowing from a heart filled with love, joy, and a desire to see Your will done on earth.
As we go forth from this moment, remind us that every penny put forth is a step towards restoration—restoration of lives, families, and communities broken by sin and trials. May we lift our offerings to You, knowing that You can do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20).
In all things, dear Lord, let Your name be glorified as we strive to serve, build, and bless Your Kingdom. We thank You, Lord, for the blessings You have bestowed upon us and the opportunity to be Your instruments in the world.
In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray,
Amen.
