A Prayer for Growth in Faith and Virtue
"For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." - 2 Peter 1:5-8

Heavenly Father,
As I come before You today, I bow my heart in humble gratitude for the gift of faith that You have bestowed upon me. I recognize that faith is but the foundation upon which I am called to build my life, and thus, I approach You with a sincere desire to grow deeper in my relationship with You, as Your Word instructs in 2 Peter 1:5-8: "And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity."
Lord, I understand that You call me to make every effort to add to my faith goodness. I ask that You help me to embody virtue in my thoughts, words, and actions. May Your light shine through me as I seek to live a life that reflects Your character. Help me to be kind-hearted and generous, fostering an attitude of goodwill towards all I encounter.
In my quest for goodness, I humbly seek Your wisdom and understanding, for the next step is to add knowledge. Let my pursuit of knowledge be driven by a desire to know You more deeply. Your Word teaches me that knowledge of You is the beginning of wisdom, so I pray that You enlighten my mind and open my heart to the truths of Scripture. May I study the Bible not merely as a text but as Your living Word, guiding my daily walk. Lord, grant me discernment to understand Your ways, and may I apply Your wisdom in every aspect of my life.
As I cultivate knowledge, Lord, I pray for self-control. It is easy to lose sight of the path You have set for me, especially when temptations arise. Strengthen my spirit so that I might resist the lures of the world and the desires of my flesh. Help me to practice self-restraint in moments of weakness, for I desire to reflect Your strength in my life. May I remember the words of Paul, that when I am weak, then I am strong in You. Let my self-control be a testimony to others, revealing the power of Your grace operating within me.
Next, dear Father, I seek to add perseverance to my character. Life’s trials can often cause weariness, yet I know they serve a purpose in shaping my faith. Instill in me the steadfastness to continue pressing forward, even when the journey becomes arduous. Remind me of the eternal reward that awaits those who persevere. Help me to fix my eyes on You, the Author and Finisher of my faith, trusting that You work all things together for my good.
As I develop godliness, may my life reflect Your holiness. Teach me to walk in Your ways, to set aside my selfish desires for the sake of exemplifying Christ in me. Impart to me a heart that reveres You, seeking Your glory above all else. May my actions demonstrate a commitment to righteousness that draws others to Your light.
In addition, I ask for mutual affection, Lord, that I may foster harmony and compassion among others. Teach me to love my neighbor as myself, to empathize with their struggles, and to celebrate their joys. In a world often filled with division, help me to be a peacemaker, making every effort to maintain unity in the bond of peace.
Finally, I pray for a deep, abiding love—the greatest of all virtues. Teach me to love like You love, unconditionally and sacrificially. Let love be the driving force behind all I do, for I know that love never fails. Your Word assures me that if I possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep me from being ineffective and unproductive in my knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Lord, may this prayer transform my heart, igniting within me a fervent desire to pursue these qualities diligently. Help me to be a vessel of honor, equipped for every good work. As I grow in faith, may I reflect the beauty of Your love and grace in all areas of my life.
In Jesus' mighty name, I pray,
Amen.
