A Prayer for Divine Increase and Discernment in Leadership
“And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?” — 2 Samuel 24:3
O Gracious and Merciful Father,
In this sacred moment, we bow our heads before Thee, acknowledging that Thou art the Creator of all that exists, and the Giver of life and blessings. We come before Thee today with a humble heart, reflecting on the profound words spoken in 2 Samuel 24:3: "And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?"
Lord, we recognize that every soul upon this earth is precious, and it is by Thy divine hand that we are allotted days to live and serve. We beseech Thee, O Lord, to grant us an increase not only in numbers but in the strength of spirit and character among Thy people. Just as Joab prayed for the increase of Israel, we earnestly desire the same for our communities, our churches, and our nations. We seek an outpouring of Thy love and favor, that we may see not just a multitude of lives, but transformed lives that reflect Thy glory and grace.
O God, we ask that Thou wouldst bless our leaders with the wisdom to appreciate the responsibility that comes with such growth. Help them to understand that with every increase in numbers, the need for spiritual guidance and moral integrity becomes all the more pressing. Just as Joab inquired about King David's delight in the counting of the people, we too ponder our own motivations, questioning whether our pursuits are led by Thy Spirit or by our own desires for recognition and power.
Grant us discernment, Father, to seek after what truly pleases Thee. May our hearts, like Joab's, be attuned to Thy will and may we strive not for empty achievements but for deep, meaningful relationships rooted in truth and love. Help us to remember that each person we encounter is a unique creation of Thine, endowed with purpose and destiny. Teach us to see them through Thine eyes, and to nurture them with compassion and grace.
In times when we may feel overwhelmed by numbers and the weight of our positions, remind us, O Lord, that everything thrives under Thy hand of blessing. Just as Joab encouraged King David to trust in Thy capacity to add an hundredfold to the people, instill in us the faith to believe in Thy abundant provision. May we lean not on our own understanding or our own metrics of success, but rather on the promises laid out in Thy Word. Let us not grow weary in the seemingly mundane tasks of nurturing our communities, for they are the building blocks of an increase that is pleasing in Thy sight.
Jesus, our ultimate Shepherd, guide us as we seek to lead others towards salvation and transformation. Fill our hearts with a passion to reach those lost in the wilderness of despair. Teach us how to count the blessings in each conversation, each act of kindness, and each moment shared in Thy presence. May we be the hands and feet of Christ in our world, ever mindful that our greatest delight is not in the numbers but in seeing lives changed by Thy love.
Heavenly Father, as we close this prayer, we ask for Thy divine insight into our hearts and desires. Replace any pride or selfish ambition with humility and a spirit of servitude. May we continually ask ourselves why we delight in growth and success, ensuring that our motives align with Thy heart's desire.
In all things, we trust in Thy perfect will and timing. May our efforts be blessed, multiplied, and grounded firmly in Thy truth, leading ultimately to the exaltation of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
