A Prayer for Eloquence and Understanding in the Word of God
"¶ And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus." - Acts 18:24

O Lord God Almighty,
We come before You with hearts full of gratitude and reverence for Your Word, which is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path (Psalm 119:105). Today, as we reflect on Your servant Apollos, as recorded in Acts 18:24 KJV—"And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus"—we pray for an outpouring of Your wisdom, understanding, and eloquence among us.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for this exemplary servant of Yours. We admire him not only for his eloquence but also for his dedication to understanding the scriptures. Lord, we ask that You create in us the same fervor for Your Word so that we, too, might become mighty in the scriptures. May we seek knowledge from Your Holy Word diligently and earnestly, as Apollos did, so that we can bring glory to Your name.
As Apollos was born in Alexandria, a center of learning and culture in his time, we are reminded of the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding in a world filled with distractions and false teachings. Help us, O God, to navigate our own cultures and environments, just as Apollos did, with the wisdom that comes from above. Help us to stand firm in our faith, equipped with the truth of Your Word, and to be ready to share it with those around us.
Lord, we recognize that eloquence is not merely about speaking well but about communicating Your truth effectively. May we cultivate the ability to express the profound mysteries of Your Word with clarity and grace. Let our speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt (Colossians 4:6), so that we can reach the hearts of others, just as Apollos captured the attention of those in Ephesus.
Father, we also pray for a spirit of humility, as we grow in knowledge and make our voices heard. Let us remember that it is by Your grace that we can articulate the truths of the faith, and may we never take pride in our abilities but instead humbly give all the glory back to You. Help us to approach Your Word with a learner's heart, acknowledging that there is always more to learn and discover.
As Apollos arrived in Ephesus, he brought with him a message that could ignite souls, and we ask that You empower us in a similar way. May we not shy away from proclaiming Your truth in our communities, workplaces, and circles of influence. Give us boldness to share the Good News and the understanding to explain it to those who may be unfamiliar. Encourage our hearts when we face opposition or doubt, reminding us that like Apollos, we serve a mighty God who goes before us.
And just as Aquila and Priscilla took Apollos aside to teach him a more excellent way (Acts 18:26), help us to be willing to learn from others and to mentor those who are seeking You. Teach us to embrace community and fellowship in the Body of Christ, recognizing that we are all on this journey together. Let us be attentive to Your leading and guidance as we seek opportunities to uplift each other and grow deeper in our knowledge of You.
In closing, Lord, we ask that You continuously kindle the fire of passion within our hearts for Your Word. May we become eloquent and mighty in the scriptures, as Apollos was, and let our lives reflect Your truth and love to the world. We cling to the promise found in James 1:5, that if any of us lacks wisdom, we should ask of You, who gives liberally, and we believe that You will respond.
We offer this prayer in the name of Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
