A Prayer for Humility and Reverence
"But you, Belshazzar, his son, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this; But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified." - Daniel 5:22-23

O Sovereign Lord, Creator of heaven and earth,
I come before You with a heart that trembles in awe,
bowing down before Your perfect holiness and majesty.
As I reflect on the words spoken through Your prophet Daniel,
I am reminded of the weight of Your holy name,
and the significance of humbling ourselves before You,
yet I have witnessed in my own life and the world around me,
a tendency to lift ourselves up in pride,
as Belshazzar did when he defiled Your sacred vessels.
Lord, I confess that like Belshazzar,
I have not always humbled my heart.
I have failed to recognize Your sovereignty over all flesh,
ignoring the lessons of humility and reverence that history teaches,
for You, O God, have revealed Yourself throughout generations,
proclaiming Your eternal power and divine nature.
Help me, Father, to never forget that You hold our breath in Your hand,
that every moment and every heartbeat belongs to You alone,
and that to praise the gods of silver and gold,
to find comfort in the things of this world,
is an affront to the magnificence of Your glory.
I seek Your forgiveness for times I have indulged in my desires,
while disregarding the call to honor You in all things.
Show me, Lord, where I may have idolized wealth, status, or any earthly aspiration,
and allow the lesson of Belshazzar to resonate deeply in my heart—
that to neglect the glorification of the God who created me,
is to forsake the very purpose for which I was created.
Father, I pray that You would open the eyes of my heart,
help me to see where pride seeks to take root,
and let humility arise as I acknowledge my dependence on You.
Teach me to live a life that honors You,
to glorify Your name in every relationship, thought, and action.
May I not lift up my heart against You,
as Belshazzar did,
nor partake in the celebrations of the ungodly,
but instead set my face towards You,
realizing that everything in my life—my successes, my failures,
my joys, my sorrows—are all under Your divine sovereign hand.
Lord, I pray for those around me,
that they too would experience the great revelation
of Your might and holiness.
As we witness the chaos and confusion in our world,
help us not to follow the ways of Belshazzar,
but rather lead us to humble ourselves as a nation,
a community, and individuals before You.
Infuse our hearts with the knowledge of Your great love,
that we may worship You not just with our lips,
but with our lives.
And when I see the vessels of Your house,
I pray that my response would be one of reverence
and not defilement.
Let my actions declare my faith,
and may my life be a reflection of the glory of Your kingdom.
In times of judgment, may I find myself humble at Your feet,
recognizing that You alone are worthy of praise.
As I meditate on Daniel 5:22-23,
I am reminded of the weight of accountability that rests upon me.
May I never glorify anything but You, O Lord,
for You are the only true God,
and my heart's desire is to exalt Your name forever.
In the mighty name of Jesus,
who exemplified perfect humility,
I pray these things with a sincere heart.
Amen.

You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life and all your ways."
