From the Plains of Moab to the Top of Pisgah: A Prayer of Faithful Finishing and Holy Sight

"And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. And the LORD shewed him all the land of Gilead, unto Dan," - Deuteronomy 34:1

"And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. And the LORD shewed him all the land of Gilead, unto Dan," - Deuteronomy 34:{verse.verse_number}

O LORD God Almighty, the Eternal and the True, I come before Thee with reverence and awe, taking to heart the witness of Thy holy Word: “And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. And the LORD shewed him all the land of Gilead, unto Dan,” (KJV). Lord, as I consider Moses rising from the plains and ascending to the mountain, I acknowledge that every upward step is a testimony of Thy strength given to a servant who has walked long under Thy command. Thou art the God who calls, the God who leads, and the God who sustains until the end.

Father, I confess that I often desire the comfort of the plains, where the ground is level and the path seems safer to the flesh. Yet in Thy wisdom, Thou dost invite Thy children to climb—into prayer, into obedience, into maturity, into the higher places of trust. Teach me, O LORD, to rise from whatever “plains of Moab” surround me: from discouragement, from weariness, from fear of the future, from the heaviness of unfinished tasks. Grant me grace to obey Thee even when the next step feels steep, even when the climb is lonely, even when I do not know how the story will conclude. Give me the heart of Thy servant Moses, to go up when Thou sayest, and to keep climbing until Thy purpose is fulfilled.

Lord, I thank Thee that Moses did not ascend merely by his own resolve, but under the guiding hand of Thy providence. Thou didst bring him to “the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah,” and Thy Word declares that from that place “the LORD shewed him” what lay ahead. I praise Thee because Thou art the God who reveals. Thou dost not leave Thy people in utter darkness, but in Thy timing Thou openest our eyes to see what we must see: the breadth of Thy promise, the certainty of Thy faithfulness, and the meaning of our journey.

O LORD, “shew” me also. Shew me what is true when my emotions are loud. Shew me the land of promise that Thy Word declares, even when my current view is blocked by trouble. Shew me the places where Thou hast already worked, the boundaries where Thou hast protected me, and the paths where Thou art calling me next. When I am tempted to measure my life only by what I have not reached, remind me that Thou art the One who grants vision, and that Thy gifts are not diminished by my limitations. Give me holy sight, not merely to admire outcomes, but to worship Thee as the Keeper of every covenant.

Father, I pray for the grace of faithful finishing. As Moses walked long with Thee, through wilderness hardships and moments of testing, so teach me to endure. Let me not grow bitter in my latter days, nor careless in my final steps of any assignment Thou hast given. Keep my spirit tender, my conscience clear, my hands clean, and my heart steady. If there are tasks I must complete, help me to complete them with humility. If there are prayers I must keep praying, strengthen me to keep praying. If there are burdens I must carry, help me to carry them without murmuring, remembering that Thou art worthy of my obedience.

And Lord, as Moses stood “over against Jericho,” near the threshold of what others would enter, teach me to rejoice in the victories Thou grantest beyond me. Deliver me from envy when another receives what I have only glimpsed. Deliver me from despair when my role is to prepare rather than to possess. Give me a heart that celebrates Thy continued work in the next generation, in my family, in Thy church, and in all whom Thou hast called. Let me be content to be a faithful servant, whether my name is remembered or forgotten, as long as Thy name is exalted.

O LORD, make my life an ascent of trust. When I must climb, strengthen me. When I cannot see, guide me. When I come to transitions and endings, be near to me. And when Thou dost grant me a Pisgah moment—a glimpse of Thy goodness ahead—keep me from pride, keep me from fear, and keep me from unbelief. Let that sight deepen my worship and renew my obedience.

I bless Thee, LORD, for Thou art the One who leads from the plains to the mountain, and the One who “shewed” Thy servant all that Thou hadst promised. Be my portion, my vision, and my strength. In all my steps, in every season, and unto the end, let me walk with Thee. Amen.
