A Prayer for Guarding Our Words and Actions

"Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?" - Ecclesiastes 5:6

"Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?" - Ecclesiastes 5:{verse.verse_number}

Heavenly Father,

As we come before You today, we bow our hearts in humility and reverence. We acknowledge that You are the Creator of the universe, the Giver of life, and the Fountain of all wisdom. In this moment of reflection, we turn our attention to the powerful message found in Ecclesiastes 5:6, where it is written, "Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?"

Lord, we recognize the significance of this passage in guiding our lives. Your Word reminds us to be mindful of the words we speak and the thoughts that dwell within us. We confess that there are moments when our tongues stumble and our thoughts stray, causing us to sin against You and against ourselves. Help us, dear Father, to harness the power of our words that they may be instruments of peace and truth rather than tools of destruction and deceit.

Father, You said in James 1:19, "Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath." Teach us the essence of this teaching. Instill in us a spirit of patience and self-control, so that we may think before we speak and consider the impact of our words on others. Help us to remember that every utterance carries weight and can influence our lives and the lives of those around us. May we choose to speak life, hope, and encouragement rather than despair, negativity, or malice.

Lord, we come to You seeking forgiveness for the times our voices have led us astray. Forgive us when we have used our mouths to gossip, to tear others down, or to mutter words of anger and frustration. As we turn our hearts to You in repentance, cleanse us from our iniquities and help us to approach You with a spirit of sincerity and integrity. May we never take our words lightly, for they reflect our hearts and, ultimately, our relationship with You.

Furthermore, we seek Your guidance in understanding the consequences of our words, as stated in this Scripture. You remind us that we cannot claim ignorance before You when we have spoken in haste or in error. Help us to recognize that our actions are not isolated; they bear witness to who we are as Your children. We want our lives to reflect Your glory and righteousness, not just in our deeds but also in our words.

As we engage with others — family members, friends, co-workers, and even strangers — enable us to reflect Your love and grace through our speech. May our conversations overflow with kindness, respect, and understanding. Give us the wisdom to discern when to speak up for the truth and when to remain silent in prayerful contemplation. Help us to be guided by the Holy Spirit to be voices of justice and mercy, and to uphold integrity in every dialogue.

Lastly, Lord, we meditate on the reality of Your judgment. We understand that careless words can invoke anger from You, and we fear the destruction of the fruit that we labor so tirelessly to cultivate. Therefore, we plead for Your mercy and ask that You protect the works of our hands. May our endeavors align with Your will, and may the words of our mouths serve to further Your Kingdom on earth.

We thank You, Lord, for Your relentless love, grace, and patience toward us. May we grow in our commitment to use our voices as a source of healing and strength to those around us. We surrender our mouths and our hearts to You, trusting that You will guide us in all things.

In Jesus’ name, we pray,

Amen.
