A Prayer for Justice and Stewardship

“If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another man’s field; of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution.” — Exodus 22:5

Commentary Devotional Prayer

Heavenly Father,

I come before You with a heart full of gratitude for Your righteous laws, which guide us in our daily lives. Your Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path (Psalm 119:105). Today, I reflect deeply on the wisdom of Exodus 22:5, where it says, “If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another man's field; of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution.” Lord, this verse teaches us about responsibility and the importance of making amends when we have wronged others.

Father, I confess that too often we forget the duty we owe to one another. In our pursuit of personal gain or convenience, we sometimes neglect the rights and properties of those around us. Help us, O Lord, to remember that every piece of land, every field, and every vineyard is a blessing that You have entrusted to us. May we honor this trust and maintain the integrity of the stewardship You have placed over us.

I pray that You instill within our hearts a spirit of justice, where we recognize the harm that can come from our actions, whether intentional or unintentional. Teach us to respect the livelihoods and possessions of others as we respect our own. Just as the man in the scripture shared the cost of his actions by making restitution with the best of what he had, instill in us a willingness to rise above our pride and make reparations where it is due.

Lord, guide us to reconcile relationships that may have been undermined by our negligence. Help us to seek the counsel of the wise, and to communicate openly with those we may have wronged. Give us the courage to apologize and offer restitution, knowing that true humility leads to healing and restoration. In Your divine wisdom, You’ve made it clear that restitution is not merely about compensation, but about acknowledging our responsibilities and the hardships we have imposed upon others.

Father, as we live in a world that is often driven by self-interest, may we be the exception—beacons of Your light, championing justice and equity. Teach us to always extend grace and to promote peace with our neighbors. In doing so, we reflect Your character to the world. Lord, let this principle of restitution apply to all areas of our lives, emphasizing that we are not just accountable for our actions, but also responsible for creating a supportive community where fairness and respect thrive.

As we consider our own lands and vineyards, let us also remember those who are impoverished, marginalized, or oppressed, who may have been victims of injustice. Give us a heart for the less fortunate, that we may be agents of change in their lives. Help us to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and provide for the orphans and widows, for Your Word calls us to do so (James 1:27).

Sovereign Lord, we humbly ask that you equip us with the resources and strength to be generous stewards, sharing the abundance of our fields with those in need. May our own blessings overflow onto others so that they too may experience the richness of Your love. Let our actions reflect our commitment to uphold the principles of justice that You have set before us.

In the name of Jesus, who showed us the ultimate example of selfless love and restitution, I pray. Amen.
